I see now - his parents were from Invernessshire:

1861 Census:
13 Cables Wynd, South Leith
692/2ED 13 Page 2

Gillis

Archibald, 32, Hammerman (journeyman) b. Snizort, Invernessshire
Christina, 36, b. Killiemuir*, Invernessshire
Norman, 1, b. South Leith

What information exactly were you after?

This is probably him in 1881, following on in father's footsteps:

1881 Census:
HMS Audacious, Tamar -  Vessels, Devon
RG11/2214 Folio 125 Page  7

Gillies
Norman, 18, Ord seaman  b. Leith

I see that you've had a few threads on Christina before:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,359465.0.html
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,334598.0.html

I don't want to repeat information that you already have so will wait to see what new information you need.

I wonder if this is Johan in 1901:

230 Main Street, Glasgow Gorbals
644/12 ED 44 Page

in the household of William W Munro:

Johan Gillies, boarder, 37, Ship stewardess, b. Greenock
*

*see below

No sign of Norman in Scotland or Eng & Wales. He might have been at sea in foreign waters.

How strange!

Daughter Agnes Naylor:

Marriage - 20 August 1919, at 148 Ferry Road Leith, after publication according to the forms of the Church of Scotland

Horace Samuel Nayler, ironmoulder (Bombadier, 21st Bridgade, RFA) Bachelor, aged 24. Residence - 152 Gressinstead Raod, Colchester (presently in Sussex)
and
Agnes Fraser Gillies, compositor, Spinster, aged 25. Residence - 78 Pitt Street, Leith

Here they have Norman Gilles, ship steward as deceased and Johan as still alive. Given the dates and the death of Norman in 1943 at 78 Pitt Street, I think that it was Johan that was deceased rather than Norman.

Also, if Norman and Johan married in 1898 and Agnes was 25 in 1919, she must have been born before their marriage.

Now I'm even more confused -

1901
51 North Fort Street, North Leith
692/1 ED 27/10  Page 12

Johan Gillies, hd, widow, 37, own means, b. Leith
Agnes, dau, 7, b. Edinburgh
Nora, duaghter, 14 months, b. Leith

I've checked Nora's birth entry:

North Leith:
Nora Gillies 23 January 1900 at 51 North Fort Street, Leith
Parents - Norman Gillies, shop steward and Johan m.s. Fraser. Date of marriage May 20 1898, South Leith

How can a person who died of a stroke, aged 82 in 1943, be dead in 1901 and 1919

 Huh Huh Huh

hi gadget thank you for all that information, my main interest is regarding the mother of norman, christina gillis nee bruce  she was my 3x great grandmother and from what i have found out christina sadly died in 1880 in the south leith poorhouse. in your experience would you have any ideas  as to why someone who in 1871 was married had a child and was taking in borders etc could end up only nine years later still married with a son but living and dying in such poor conditions greatfull for any suggestions

Hi geno

Do you have her death cert? If so, what was the cause of death and was Archibald still alive?

Obviously,  Norman was a seaman by then and although she had a son previously,  she doesn't seem to have any other children with Archibald.

It could be poverty or ill health with no one to care for her.
