This is a great site. Just look at the lovely old photographs.
Can you spot your ancestor in any of them?
1. Group in the garden at Old Court, Strangford 1877
2. William, Elizabeth and Martha McDowell, nee McMechan, c1873
3. Banbridge Board of Guardians, at the Workhouse, 1890a
4. Killough Cycling Club, on their annual summer outing, 1896
5. Fulton's blacksmith forge, Ballybredagh, Killinchy about 1895
6. Ned Kinnet, known locally as 'Ned Nod' or 'Glary Oxters'

Prisoners - Australia This database includes information on over 1300 convicts who were originally from
County Down and were transported to New South Wales and Van Diemen’s Land. Some of them were
held here in Downpatrick Gaol before transportation.

Blair Mayne Research Society - Link
« Reply #3 on: Friday 17 August 07 13:02 UTC (UK) »

‘The Blair Mayne Research Group’. was formed in 1995 by some local amateur military historians in the Newtownards area to research the life of Lieutenant Robert Blair Mayne, DSO (Three bars). When the Group had completed their research of the life of Lieutenant Blair Maybe (better known as Colonel Paddy), and a statue had been erected in his honour in Newtownards, it was re-named ’The Blair Mayne Research Society’, with the aim of continuing research into the lives of all Servicemen and Servicewomen from the "Ards" area who served the crown from the 1600s up to the Korean War.

The members of the Society have received many enquiries and have succeeded in finding a great deal of information. If you would like help please feel free to contact the Society.

Ballynahinch - HQ of the SEELB - Link
« Reply #4 on: Friday 17 August 07 13:36 UTC (UK) »

The Local Studies Collection, located in the South Eastern Education and Library Board Headquarters, Windmill Hill, Ballynahinch, Co. Down contains books, maps, newspapers and illustrations on the history, topography, industry, transport, literature and culture of County Down and South Antrim.

RootsChatters who live in the SEELB area can request to see items from this collection in their local library if they do not live in Ballynahinch. The Board can send out Ordnance Survey maps, street directories and old newspapers in bound volumes to be consulted in any of their twenty six branch libraries. Some of these libraries also have microfilm reader/printers - at Downpatrick, Dairy Farm, Lisburn and Bangor - which means the Board's growing collection of historic Ulster newspapers can be viewed without you having to travel to Ballynahinch.

The Bangor Library does not have facilities to view old papers at the moment as the Carnegie Library on Hamilton Road has been closed for refurbishment and the library is currently in a shop in the Flagship Centre in Main Street.

The following papers are availablle at branch libraries ...

Co. Down Spectator ... Holywood
Ulster Star ... Lisbuirn
Down Recorder ... Downpatrick.
