bunny: the site here tries to protect everybody.... that is why they take E-mails posted here off. Because anybody can read this ... you could end up receiving mail that you do not want ... Haaay, someone has to look after us Tongue
This (photo-copied) Stephenson history, that I have is titled 'The Stephenson Bochure - 1917 ~1918 - STEPHENSONS of East Yorkshire, &c - STEPHENSONS of Canada and New Zealand - ROWNTREES of York &c - PETTYS of Leeds, London and Reading - MAINPRIZE of Bridlington, Famborough &c"
It is 67 pages long ... and starts off with a John Stephenson of Carnaby, Yorks ... said to be burried in the churchyard at Boynton Apr 7, 1812 ... in his 69th year. A shepherd for nearly 50 years to Sir William Strickland. Then goes to his oldest son also John Stephenson .. born Nov 24 1774, died 1839 ... father of Joseph, William, Edmund and Benjamin (who with the exception of the last mentioned emigrated to Canada)
Benjamin .. fourth son of John Stephenson ( farmer at Cottingham) born at Cottingham Aug 7th 1818 married a Hannah Zealand at Cottingham on Dec 25 1841 ........ their children Mary born 1842 / John born 1844 / Fanny 1846 / Annie 1855 (died an infant)
As I say this is quite a detailed history ... and it also jumps back to a history of 'The Quaker Stephensons'(1600's) of Carnab, Bridlington Quay, Stockton and Manchester...of which the Rowntrees fit into, and the Martyred Marmaduke Stephenson.

William Stephenson - born 1814 at Doncaster West Yorkshire - married Mary Scott at Cottingham East Yorkshire (Hull) in 1838. Williams parents I believe were another Wm Stephenson and an Alice Carter - married Cantley Parish W Yorks (Doncaster) in 1811..... Other east riding names are Nicholls (Bridlington, Yorks and Wigan Lancs.) and the surname Withernwick.

How fascinating!!

I know from certs etc that the whole family were Methodists, even into the late 19th century

The Stephensons nearly had occupations connected to the sea, several were merchant seamen, my great grandfather Alexander was killed in action in 1917 on board a Q-ship the Vala, it was torpedoed by a u-boat.

I have only just found out in the past couple of weeks another Stephenson relative, which has proved exciting, he too was a marine fireman, the family moved to Coventry, where they live today

Another of William's brothers was also a Methodist preacher, he remained in Cottingham and married into the Zealand family

Just in case you don't already have this burial, which is in the cemetery on Eppleworth Road, Cottingham

'In loving memory of BENJAMIN STEPHENSON who died 17th October 1894 aged 76.  But the path of the just is as the shining light that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.  Also ABIGAIL ZEALAND sister in law to the above who died 3rd December 1891 aged 82.  Also HANNAH STEPHENSON wife of the above who died 9th March 1904 aged 81.  Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord'

Burial record
20/10/1894 Benjamin Stephenson, Inglemire Lane, Cottingham.  76
6/12/1891   Abigail Zealand, New Village, Cottingham.  82
12/3/1904   Hannah Stephenson, Inglemire Lane, Cottingham.  81

In this 67 page history ... inside what looks like the back cover (remembering, that what I have is a photocopy of the work ... not the actual book its self) there appears to have been an old obit., cut out of a newspaper and glued in, which reads ......
  "Sarah Cook Stephenson.
  Miss Sarah Cook Stephenson, third
daughter of the late Joseph Stephen-
son and the late Mary Wilson Stephen-
son of Cobourg, Ont., died in Toronto
yesturday in her 82nd year, after a long
illness. The late Miss Stephenson was
born in Richmond Hill, and began
teaching school in Aurora, Ont., when
18 years old, continuing active in the
profession until, she was 70 years of
age. For 23 years she was on the staff
of DeMills Collage, Oshawa and St.
Catharines and also taught for three
years in mission schools. She was a
life long Methodist and a member of
(Glebe)? Road United Church.  There
survive two brothers, Dr A.R. Stephen-
son of Ogdensburg, New York, and
Edmund F Stephenson, of Victoria
B.C., and one sister, Mrs David Stouf-
fer, of (162)? Albertus Avenue, Toronto, at
whose home, service will be held Sun-
day evening at 8:30 o'clock. Interment
will be in Cobourg on Monday."

Now ... I asume this obit, was glued in here  because she was of this same family line. I do not know what year the news item is from ... or what paper it was cut out of.

Hi Ken S,

I believe I am also descended from the Stephenson's of Cottingham - Benjamin & Hannah are my great, great grandparents (through John) and my father had the "Zealand" reference in his name.

I would love to be able to get a copy of the brochure you mentioned - I am unable to find much reference to anything here in Australia. I know my grandmother had a "book" when I was a child but she died and no one can seem to tell me where that went - which is a real shame.

Thanks Cheryl.
