West or Stewart on Islay

I am trying to get information on my Gt Grandfather's family on Islay. He was born William West in 1870 in Kilchoman Parish, mother Christina West. Her father was Morrison West born about 1816 originally from Ireland. William had his name changed to Stewart and left Islay to settle on Bute. Any information would be gratefully received.
