Hi Kath...Yes, I read the webpage after I sent the last post and have copied and pasted the information on my database. Many thanks for your efforts.
As an English woman I can't get my head (or rather my tongue) around some of the Irish names as they're so difficult to read let alone pronounce, have you had that problem or are you Irish and can speak both languages?
Yes, it is reasonable to assume that if Rose Ann was born in Co. Mayo then her mother would have been born there too. Can't really say as much about Thomas (her father) as he could have travelled for work etc. So he could have been born in another county or even another country. There are no records for either Thomas nor Hannah before they came to England. Would I have more luck with the Irish censuses? I haven't found them very helpful up to now.
Kind regards Chris.

www.brsgenealogy.com (pay to view site 5 Euros)
Anne Milford / Church Baptism / 1840 / County Mayo

Hi Dee...Thanks for your help.
I've looked on the brs website but unless Ann belongs to another member of the Milford family I'm not sure this will help me. I'm actually looking for Rose Ann Melford/Milford. Unless her parents dropped the Rose to get her passage out of Ireland? Not sure why they would do this. There are no records in Ireland for Rose Ann or any of her family that I can find.
Kind regards Chris

Hi Kath...Yes, as you say, there's hardly any Milfords in Co. Mayo, so it does look more like they belong to my family. I'll apply for John Milford's birth certificate (the English born son)and see where that gets me.
Kind regards Chris

Hunnyb22 & Heywood, I found that I had 1 credit left on Mayoancestors.com so I have used it up for the Baptism for Anne. (Well, I was never going to find any of our lot - they are a total mystery). Here it is:
Church Baptism
Name: Anne Milford Date: 5th Jan 1840 Address: Kilbree Parish Islandeady, Roman Catholic, South Mayo Father: Thomas Milford Mother: Honoria Bery 1. Sponsor John Milford 2. Sponsor Bridget Lawless
I would love it to be your lady, but as Heywood said, Mayo records are as rare as 'hen's teeth'. (It's a long story for our lot)

Heywood, I was thinking along the same lines as yourself. I've spent years going through Mayo records (what there is of them and nothing is ever as it seems). That last unit has been sitting there for nearly 12 months so better to try and help someone with it. I certainly had no use for it. Happy hunting Chris.

Hi Dee...Thank you so much for using your credit to help me, it's greatly appreciated.
There were a lot of fatalities in those days, because of the potato famine a lot of people died of starvation and disease.
You're probably right, Ann could be one of Thomas and Hannah's children. However, there seems to be a lot of Anns, Hannah, Ann, Rose Ann and Mary Ann.
We can only assume Honoria/Hannah Berry is my maternal great, great grandmother as it's the closest we're going to get with this family, which is probably the right one anyway.
Hannah's surname is probably spelt Berry or Bury, although the name hasn't cropped up in any records I've found, either on the English or Irish records. However, I'm not doubting this as I'm a lot further with this family than I've been for a long time. Thank you both, Kath and Dee, for your help.
Our kids take a lot for granted these days, perhaps by creating our family trees now, will help future generations realise what hardships their ancestors went through just to survive?
My next mission is to put all this information on my family tree and find out when and how the Melford/Milfords came over to England, what their journey was like etc.
Kind regards Chris.
