Hi,
Can anyone tell me if there was a cemetary near to the Montrose/Sunnyside Insane Asylum ?
One of my ancestors William Bruce died there on 22nd June 1878, and was wandering if he would have been buried within the grounds or at a nearby cemetary. Would there be any records of his death ?
Regards,
Daryl

Hi Ev,
I received a reply from the Angus cemeteries office about Sleepyhillock & Rosehill, and unfortunately records only date from 1894 onwards.
Regards,
Daryl

would it mention a burial place on the death cert ?
No. The place of burial wasn't included on death certs after about 1860.

Hi, My G Grandfather Robert BEATTIE also died at the Montrose Asylum at Hillside on 23 September 1899. Hillside is several miles from the town of Montrose.
I was able to obtain his medical and commital records from University of Dundee archives. cost me 14 pounds for the transcripts.
I would also like to find the burial sight. he was a Pauper on the death record.
My own guess is that all the Paupers were buried near the Ayslum , maybe Hillside itself or St Cyrus in Kincardine.
I would be gratefull of any leads in finding the burial info.

The cost of a pauper burial would be borne by the parish of settlement of the pauper, not by the asylum, so it would be the parochial board of that parish who would decide where to bury the patient. The chances are that they would either be taken to the nearest burial ground in the parish of Montrose, because it was probably cheaper, but they could have been taken back to their own parish if it wasn't far. I very much doubt that paupers who died in Sunnyside would routinely have been buried in St Cyrus because that isn't just a different parish, it's a different county.

I recently was searching for a Pauper who died at Sunnyside Asylum in September 1899.
I found him in the Burial book for Sleepyhillock cemetery in the free ground in section F (Free ground),(furthest from the main gate).
The burial record register is at The Angus Council offices, Ravenswood 8 New Road, Forfar in the Leisure, Neighbourhood services department. They are open 10 am to noon and 2 pm to 4 pm Monday to Friday. Turn left at the Tollbooth Pub or opposite the Post Office of High Street. to enter New Road.
I did notice several more inmates from Sunnyside in the register.
