I have just got my Great Great Grandfather's military record after nearly 10 years of searching! Previously I knew his name and not much else.
He was in the 68th Regiment and died in Mountmellick on 5th February 1847. I don't know the area at all so wondering what are the chances of there being a marked grave there - he was Mark HAMMOND.

Hi Martin,
I have a lot of burial records from Mountmellick, the Council records only start in 1905 and these are all RC.
Graigue cemetery on the outskirts of Mountmellick would be the oldest with a burial dating back to 1755, and these records were compiled after restoration was carried out in the cemetery. From the stones recorded there is no Hammond recorded, but several of the stones could not be read, so it's possible he could be buried there, or perhaps buried elsewhere becuase of being military. There is a girl in Laois County Council that looks after the archives and may be of assistance, but I cannot give her name or email here, if you wish to avail of it, send me a pm. Regards,

Thanks I will send you a message.
I am not optimistic about there being a marked grave but would just like to check.
I don't think he would be RC but his wife was, she was Catherine O'Shea. They married in Canada just before the regiment returned to England. I think she was born in Canada but her parents were Irish, their son was baptised in the RC Cathedral in Quebec and their daughter in a RC church in Chester presumably because of their mother's faith.
