Strachur - McNab
« on: Monday 23 March 09 21:14 UTC (UK) »

Hi folks, new to the board and hopefully you's may be of help.

Managed to trace my Grandfather's family to Strachur Argyll but i have hit a dead end. I have used Scotlandspeople.org to good effect but have now hit a snag. My Grandfather died back in late 70's/ early 80's. Donald ( Dougie ) McNab. Son of Donald McNab ( Retired Coachman ) Died 1936 in Strachur and Catherine McNab ( Nee McKay ). He had 2 brothers John and the other i think was Alex. Maybe possible that Alex went on to play for Greenock Morton then moved to the USA although not 100% sure.

If anyone in Strachur uses the forum or indeed anyone else that could help me in any way i would very much appreciate it.

Kind Regards

Alan MacLennan

Hi Alan

Welcome to Rootschat.

I believe I have found family on 1901 Census but no Donald shown - however, you don't state when your grandfather was born so this was possibly after 1901.

1901 - Minard Castle Stables, Kilmichael Glassary, Argyllshire

Donald McNab   Head    36   Coachman      b. Glassary, Argyllshire
Catherine McNab Wife   34                         b. Kirkhill, Invernesshire
Alexander McNab  Son   5                           b. Glassary, Argyllshire
John M. McNab      Son   3                                     ditto
Catherine F. McNab Dau 2                                    ditto

Roll CSSCT1901_178

Looked for marriage and it looks like they married 1891 Kirkhill, Inverness - Donald McNab and Catherine McKaig (??) - think this is mistake and should read McKay.

Searched the IGI on familysearch.org and found:

Donald McNab b.9/12/1864 Glassary, Argyllshire son of John McNab and Helen Campbell.

Catherine McKay b.12/5/1864 Kirkhill, Invernesshire, dau. of Kenneth McKay and Catherine Fraser.

Then checked 1871 Census:

1871 - No.9 Shirdrim, Glassary, Argyllshire

John McNab jnr.     Head   40   Ploughman     b. Glassary
Helen McNab         Wife     45                         b. Greenock, Renfrewshire
John McNab          Son      16                          b. Glassary
Mary McNab          Dau.     13                               ditto
Duncan McNab      Son      9                                 ditto
Donald McNab       Son     6                                  ditto
Isabella McNab     Dau.    3                                  ditto

Roll CSSCT1871_90

1871 - Drumchardney, Kirkhill, Invernesshire

Kenneth MacKay     48    Labourer              b. Margringh, Ross shire
Catherine MacKay   44                                b. Kiltarlity, Invernesshire
Alexr. MacKay          13                                b. Kirkhill, Invernesshire
Ann MacKay             10                                          ditto
Mary MacKay            8                                            ditto
Catherine MacKay    6                                            ditto
Christina MacKay     3                                             ditto

Roll CSSCT1871_18

The 1864 birth shows Catherine fibbed about her age on 1901 Census - this is the only Catherine McKay born in time period in Kirkhill and confirmed on Scotlands People.

Only had a few credits left on Scotlands People so have only viewed indexes there.   You can now view some more certificates yourself now and hopefully will then be able to trace the family back using the IGI on familysearch.org.

Good Luck.

Annette

Hi Annette,

Thankyou very much for all that information. I think i may have found a little bit of what you have just posted. I have a few credits left myself on the Scotlandspeople.org so if you require any help at all then just let me know. I am a little stuck on the Donald that was married to Catherine as Catherine was my late mum's middle name Elizabeth Catherine McNab and the daughter in that family was called Catherine so it might be possible that's the right family as my Grandfather had a couple of brothers that i have heard mentioned. Alex who went on to play for Morton and John who was involved at Morton as a scout in someway. They all came from Strachur

Think my Grandfather was born after 1901. He died at the end of the 70's or early 80's in the London area, possibly Hemel Hempstead or Watford but i cant find him at all in any register down there even though i attended the funeral albeit very young.

I just wonder if Donald was born after Catherine.

Many thanks for your help again as it is very much appreciated Annette  and as i said, if you would like any help in the future then i'd be glad to help.

Regards

Alan

Hi Alan,
Welcome to RootsChat.  Cheesy
The name McNab caught my eye.
We have 4 Donald McNabs, the last 2 born in Australia.
The first 2 are from Scotland.
Donald McNab born Ayrshire c. 1840 migrated to Aus. and married Frances COOPER.
His father was Archibald McNab who married Mary McNichol,  and an uncle was Donald. As far as we know they came from Ayrshire.

I'm sure you'll find RootsChatters a helpful and friendly lot.  Cheesy
