Munition factory in Staffordshire
« on: Monday 23 March 09 21:41 UTC (UK) »

Hi
I am looking for information on Munition Factories in Staffordshire, close to Sedgley or Coseley. My Grandmother came to see her mother in Coseley in 1916 and had to stay for a year. She ended up working in a Munition factory for that time period. Is there any close to this area.

Thanks
Greg

I cant give you to much info here... but behind where I live is what "was" once a munitions factory, mom often tells me of it, and a neighbour(no longer w us) worked there too, its on the sight of what is now church road motors wolverhampton, the school down the road (which I cant find any trace of except that it is shown on old maps in wolverhampton archives as "school" and is where my grandfather was supposed to have gone) was known by the kids who played on its ground after it had been demolished as "the old army"... another connection?

Hi Greg,

There is a very interesting article about a munitions factory in Dudley, which is not too far from Sedgley and Coseley.  You can access it throug this link.

There was also a munitions factory in Tipton where about 20 girls were killed and many more severely burnt in 1919. The girls were de-fusing shells in a room where there was an open fire when there was a great explosion!! I remember my mother telling me the story of the badly injured girls being brought past her parents home in Burnt Tree on their way to Dudley Guest Hospital. Apparently, the local vicar donated most of his skin to be used as skingrafts

Thank you for your replies, it is very interesting reading. My Grandmother never said much to me about her time at the factory. I just found out about it from my Mother.

Thanks again.
