Jarvis / Miles little wenlock area
« on: Tuesday 24 March 09 01:23 GMT (UK) »

Has anyone information on the Jarvises of Little Wenlock or Miles of Westinstow. I have Elizabeth Jarvis chr 21 mar 1813 in LW. Father William Jarvis. Elizabeth married John Miles. Their son was Edwin - b1837 Huntington - though he was christened Jarvis. Thereafter he alternated between Jarvis and Miles in different censuses ... can anyone explain why this might be? See below
urname changes from census to census between Jarvis and Miles, and Jarvis Miles. In 1851 it is mispelled as Milnes
DATE      PLACES      Location      Name
1837      Huntington               Jarvis
1841      Huntington      1km NNE of LW   Miles
1851      Little Wenlock            Milnes
1861      New Works      1km NE Huntington   Jarvis
1871      New Works               Miles
1881      Trench                  Jarvis
1891      Trench         1km N Hadley      J.Miles
1901      Trench                  Jervis Miles

why did family keep switching names? was it to avoid taxes, debts? avoid being traced - or just an artifact of way the census question was asked?  Or perhaps there were some financial advantages??
Thanks

Hi..Welcome to Rootschat Paul

When did Elizabeth Jarvis and John Miles marry ?

Its possible that Edwin was illigitimate  and as he was so young he took on the name of Miles and as he got older reverted to his real name of Jarvis  Huh

Ive found the marriage now in 1838-Madeley-Shropshire..

I think the birth cert of Edwin will confirm that he was probably illigitate  and he  was  born to Elizabeth in 1837 and when she married soon after to John Miles, Edwin took his name

Hello
I have Jarvis's of Little Wenlock.
My g.g.g.grandmother is Sarah Jarvis b.1812. She also had a illegitimate son like your Elizabeth and married after to Edwin Alexander Harris in 1843. I have got my Jarvis's back to the 1700's but have not seen a William yet.
I have found my Jarvis and Harris's grave behind Little Wenlock church. They are all buried in the same plot and I think the earliest date on it was very early 1700.
