Hello
I am looking for the ancestors of Henry Parks, a collector at the Polegate Toll House in 1841, who was apparently born ca 1781 in Hailsham, Sussex, married to a Mary Smith and died in Hailsham in 1853. I have him recorded as the father of my David Parks b 29/6/1828 Hailsham. I have also noted two other children - Stephen b 14/9/1814 & Martha b around 1805 both in Hailsham. Some of these details have come from Bob Hewitt & his Bradford family site.
I would be very grateful if anyone can assist and it goes without saying that I will share and help anyone else in any way I can.
Thank you
Mick

Hope that helps ! Sean PS All baptisms from the Sussex Family HIstory Group Database, if you have lots of ancestors in Sussex it is well worth the £12 for the year to access it.

Thanks for this Sean - it's great & I really do appreciate this help.
Couple of points (sorry to be a pain) -
Can you please confirm the Henry Parks - Mary Smith marriage date of 2 Dec 1802, as an alternative source has said 2/12/1804? Was there any other info supplied, like witnesses, address, etc?
The list of baptisms is very impressive and rather surprising. (Perhaps the Polegate Tollgate was not very busy!) Were they done in a particular church or chapel? I recognise Stephen & David but was surprised not to see a Peter (ca 1808) or a Martha (ca 1805). For Stephen & David, was there any other info - I am thinking of father's profession, address, etc. Also, can you please confirm these two baptism dates for me because another source has advised a birthdate for Stephen of 14/9/1814 and a birthdate rather than baptism of David on 29/6/1828.
The other names are completely new to me. Can you please confirm that each of these referred specifically to Henry Parks and Mary Smith as parents or was it Henry Parks & Mary, or worse, just Henry Parks? Were any other details supplied, again, like address, father's profession, church, etc.
Obviously the bulk baptisms of 11/4/1824 (do they get a cheap rate and did they do it outside in the big pond?) can be assumed to be kids of the same parents. It might seem from the birth-baptism pattern that these were perhaps not the same family as the earlier christenings which occurred relatively soon after the births. I was also a little confused to note that Philip & Charles were born within two months of each other!
The spread does worry me too - to have kids over a 25 year period is not unknown but it is not so usual. Mind you I have started this search believing that Martha 1805 and David 1828 were siblings!
The Henry Parkes baptism was an excellent find, thank you. Again was there any other info?
Do you know why the John Parks - Mary Norman marriage records show two dates & two places? Was it that they read the first banns in Wilmington and eventually, three years later, married 5 miles away in Hailsham? Were any address or witnesses etc. mentioned?
Thanks again for all your help
Regards
Mick

I think the thing to remember is that all of my information is from transcripts and therefore you do run the risk of some information being wrong.
The Henry Parks & Mary Smith marriage date is 2 Dec 1802, no other information I am afraid.
The baptisms were all carried out in St Mary's Hailsham. Stephen just has the baptism as stated and no birth date. David has no birth date just a baptism date which is the same as Elizabeths so is more likely to be a baptism rather than a birth. All of the baptisms referred to the parents as Henry Parks & Mary. From the 1824 baptisms onwards Henry is described as a labourer. Yes Phillip & Charles do seem a little close ! No more info on Henry Parkes baptism or the marriage of his parents.
I suggest a look at census records for 1841 (might have a look myself to satisfy curiosity) to see if they tie in with the baptisms. It could be that there were two Henry & Mary Parks !
Regards Sean
