Mercy Hannah Turner Look Up

Born abt 1857 in Lewes, and married a Graimes and had a daughter called Flora Graimes. However, she then appears in a later census seperated from her husband and living with her daughter in Cooksbridge. However, I can't trace who her parents were or for that matter the first name of her husband.

Hi

Which is the census in which you have found Mercy and Flora?  Is it the 1911, or do you have them in 1901 also? (I can see them in 1911 but not easily in 1901).

Flora's marriage certificate ought to tell you her father's name and occupation:

I found them on the 1911 census, but also struggled to find her on the 1901 even though she was born in 1894.

Here's a possible scenario (which involves Mercy tweaking her name a lot!):

Marriage Jun qtr 1881

Mercy Annie TURNER
George FUNNELL

on same page, Brighton 2b 448a


Birth Dec qtr 1893   

Flora FUNNELL     
Brighton  2b 214  (NB this is consistent with her being 17 b Brighton per 1911 census)


Marriage Mar qtr 1899    

Mercy Fanny FUNNELL 
William Henry GRAIMES     

on same page, Lewes 2b 250

It all seems to tie in.

Just to clarify.

She got married to George Funnell, had Flora Funnell in 1893 with George Funnell. Then divorced and married Henry Graimes?

It's all surmise at the moment, and unfortunately I can't yet find census evidence 1881-1901 - but yes, the theory would run something along those lines (though in those days widowhood was more usual than divorce).

I found a flora funnell in the 1901 census but she was born in Portsmouth and was 8 at the time which is around the age that she would have been.
