missing OPRs from Killin?
« on: Tuesday 24 March 09 18:34 UTC (UK) »

I remember reading somewhere that certain OPRs from Killin were lost or destroyed - and I think that may be the reason I have hit a brick wall in my rsearch. Does anyone happen to know about this ie which records are missing and why?
Thanks!

The Killin baptisms run from 1689 to 1854.and the marriages from 1687 to 1854. However, this is not to say that they run continously from these dates.  I remember reading a book which gave details of the gaps for each parish but for the life of me I can't remember what it was called.
Does anyone know ?

The LDS website does hold some information on the parish records, but it is buried! I have come across a few but only ever by googling, not going through the main site. It is some kind of Research Wiki.

Found it!
https://wiki.familysearch.org/en/Main_Page

https://wiki.familysearch.org/en/Killin%2C_Perthshire%2C_Scotland

Maybe this was the book mentioned by Isles? It is the source for the wiki data.

"Key to the Parochial Registers of Scotland, by V. Ben Bloxham, pub. 1970"

Hope this helps.

That's the one val.
It's actually on the Corn Exchange come up either King st or from the Albert hall end, and it is at the top of the hill . It's handy as well because the council Registrar's office for births deaths and marriages is across the road,
although you need to make an appointment to see them.

Thanks Kenny. Is there car parking nearby?  I suppose I could always park near the Albert halls and actually WALK up the hill!
I have never been to a Registrar other than to register something - so I dont know what info they can provide - how far back do the records go and is there a search fee do you know?
Have you been to the archives at Viewforth?

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers.htm gives the LDS IGI Batch Numbers so you can search at www. familysearch.org by individual parishes. For instance, putting C113612 in the [Batch Number] field should return all births in the parish of Killin between 1689 and 1854.

Unfortunately, the LDS website used a database with a limit of only 5000 records (for births, for marriages its less than 3200). For my family, births are not listed in batch C113612 but in batches  7417620, 7417621, 7417622 and 7417623 (which translates as the 20th, 21st, 22nd and 23rd batches transcribed by the LDS on 25jun1974). Looking at those births on the LDS microfiche shows the proper Batch Number of C113612. The same problem exists with batch C113611 (Killin births from 1855 to 1875) and for a lot batches relating to other parishes all over Scotland. The results for these surplus records show the name in CAPITAL letter, to show they are transcribed OPR entries, rather than ancestor records "submitted" by LDS members.

Thanks for that - very useful!
