Killed by a cart?
« on: Friday 11 September 09 17:56 UTC (UK) »

I think this says that he was killed (near Carlisle) by the 'overturn of a bank cart' but would welcome confirmation from elsewhere.

I assume that there will be coroner's records somewhere. A lot of Mr Carrick's coroner's reports appear in the local press but I can't find this incident. Can anyone else?

Richard

"Cart" there are other "B"s to compare the word to.

I don't know if you already know, but Shaddongate Mills was a large cotton factory mill, built in 1835-6.

It could possibly have been one of the carts used for delivery, materials that was involved in the accident

Lucky you, one of my g.grandfather's died in 1865 and there was a coroner's inquest, but unfortunately, the report doesn't seem to have survived.

Oh thats a shame LizzieW

Mine came like a copy from the news paper and I copied it out so that the next generation could read it
this was 1878 his accident was at Sprunton bridge

What made me laugh was that after the doctor had examined him two friends took him home

Now there were 10 children
just think
A cottage most likely two rooms and all that would be in the cottage a table and bed maybe two chairs

So I think poor James Maghie would be laid on the table and the kids would all have a look at him

I will try to find time to look for the address if not the library at carlisle its some other place

Hi  Smiley

There's an ndex and also copies of inquest reports in the record office at Carlisle Castle, but I'm not sure that there are any quite this early.  I think they start in the last quarter or so of the 19th cnetury.   That may be where you came unstuck, Lizzie.

I may be wrong, so check with them about dates.

If there isn't one, the newspapers are the only choice.  If you haven't found it listed, though, there are at least two papers at many dates, so make sure you check both.  There's definitely a Cumberland Pacquet at this date, and I think there may be artriot or Journal.  If you email the library, unless you can get here, they'll tell you.

Best wishes

I did get someone to search in the newspapers in the Derbyshire Archives (the inquest was held in Derby) but unfortunately, there was a general election around the same time and the newspapers were (as now) full of electioneering.

I know what the cause of his death - related to alcohol - I just wondered where he'd been found, you know all the interesting bits.  I already knew, from my mum (he was her mother's grandfather) that he had drunk away all his wife's fortune, so I wasn't surprised at the reason he died.

Sounds a good interesting tale to tell
I think I would be interested in reading this if it was mine

Poor James had been seeing to some poor animal he was on his way home when he was killed on his gig

I thought he was a vet  but found out through the coroners report he wasn't he was know as Jimmy the cow doctor
So you need to find this report
