Scrimnet...

'WW1 - miltary & medical....' you mentioned?

What do you know about VADs, dare I ask? Any idea where I could find a list of VAD Hospitals or where a particular repatriated POW on return from 5 years in Berlin was sent to recover in 1919?

... and theres more... I have a photo of a nissen hut Christmas party 1918 at the School of Bomb Dropping and Aiming at RAF Whatton (?) where my Grandpa was a carpenter - making propellers in the RFC.

Any thoughts?

re. Buttressed courts
« Reply #46 on: Saturday 28 March 09 15:43 UTC (UK) »

Paulene...

Its just another sign of a misspent youth!

Some schools play Eton Fives - a stone and cement walled court, open at the back with a step halfway in and a decidedly church style buttress about 5 ft high on the left at the side.

Otehers schools play fives on a court which has no buttress and I think..... but stand willing to be corrected... wiithout a step.

The game is played with a hard little ball wrapped in a meagre layer of oxode plaster tape and you hit it with a padded gloved hand.

KES was famous as being one of the top schools at Eton Fives. Stowe played but never at the same level :-( and it hurt!

... is that right Scrimnet?

Would I know your in laws? The 'H mafia' were very much around the HGC!

You said
"His mother and grandmother went to KEHS / Camp Hill Girls as well..."

Are you referring to the Colonel?

How do you now that? I dont know that!

Thats why I asked if you were a 'medium' with powers of super perception... it is possile because Emily Louise lived in the right area to walk there... I dont know who his mother was or his grandmother!

Just a bit stunned...

Colin,
I need to just go back and check this, but I think William Henry's father was also called William Henry Brookes, and his mother was Elizabdeth Louise (nee Hale).
I'll just check, and be back.

Sorry mate...

Was referring to the young Padawan, my son.... Embarrassed

There are some lists of various VAD and Red Cross hospitals...but beware...I counted around 30+ in and around Northampton alone....

I have a great interest in the subjects mentioned.... Wink

I'll explain in a PM...

Scrimnet,

Brill'

The VAD Hospital I was looking for should have been at Drago House, Washford, Somerset.

The VAD would have been a Mrs Hayes widow of Capt Claud Hayes.

The Patient was my great Uncle (seen on the left!) he has his own Wikipedia page - try Fred Pentland!

.... sorry Scrimnet,

that should be Dragon House, Washford - the connection is that Fred and the Colonel's lady were brother and sister!

Hi Colin,
I know I had a lot of difficulty following the family's movements - on one census in particular.
I found a marriage, which I presume is the right one:
Marriages mar 1876
Brookes William Henry
Hale Elizabeth Louisa
Stourbridge   6c    200

Then, with information from the census, regarding her place of birth (Middlesex), I found the following birth registration in 1867:
Births Sep 1867
HALE Elizabeth Louisa   Bethnal Green    1c    310

Sorry, bit longer than a mo.
Well, I was working on my friends family tree, and had middlesex on the brain (where her family originated), so I copied the wrong one down Embarrassed
This is the right birth:
Births Mar 1858
Hale Elizabeth Louisa
Stourbridge   6c   240.
Which would have made her eighteen years of age at the time of her marriage. (That's a bit better Wink)

Thanks a bundle Paulene, that takes us another step forward.

That fits very nicely! Stourbridge includes Quinton which adjoins Harborne, where Lt Col. W H Brookes is buried!

So do you think W H Brookes senior, who she married in 1876 in Stourbridge / Quinton, was from Kings Norton? Its next door too!

The photo of the Colonels grave will probably tell us more and I sort of expect to fin his son mentioned on it! He would be 100 this year and I cant be that lucky... or can I!

Again thanks
