Hi Colin,
I thought you were in Staffs! Grin Small world, isn't it!
Thanks for the map - I'd worked it out that mine were dotted around from just above were Fisher Street is (one ran the The Red Lion Inn on Fisher Street) down to about where the Tividale Hall/Hopkins St bus stop is.
Still haven't found where Bayley's buildings was, though. Most of them were in this area, and later started spreading out to various palces around there; and some further afield to Derbyshire, Middlesborough area, Birkenhead, and Barrow in Furness.
I like to find where Sarah Adams's daughter, Sarah Ann Bayley's family went to - apparently ( according to Sarah Adams' will) they were left eh family Bible - and who knws what wonderfgul information that might contain!
Anyway, Colin, we're digressing  Grin Can I help you with the army service records on ancestry?

Yes, please. I dont have Ancestry membership... that would be super.

Shall I try and find you the Bayley's buildings? I found the 1911 is good for that sort of search?

I tried to find my pear tree lane in Tipton without success. In the end I realised it was in Brierly Hill but the telephone exchange was Tipton... I ran that weighbridge and made the tea and shared the multipler pints of Mild at a tiny pub just over the Canal bridge with the gys from the Steel Mill in 1958,9,60 in my last years at school... its a long time ago! I went back last year and it has changed!

Bailey... home?
« Reply #18 on: Thursday 26 March 09 20:39 UTC (UK) »

I have found no Bayley Buildings in the area but there is a Bailey Street, Dudley Port, Tipton on 1911 (BAILEY STREET DUDLEY PORT TIPTON STAFFS) and numbers 3 and 4 are listed hereditaments.

Any use?

Hi Colin,
Sorry for the delay in replying - my son in law came down to Peterborough for an interview, and called in to see us.

I've found what I think is the medal card for William Henry Brookes (but it might not be!)
This is what it says for the address;
In the field Undecided
Fullwood Barracks   Preston (has some marks next to this, which I'm sure have been discussed on rootschat - but I can't remember what they mean Embarrassed)
c/o Messrs Cox & Co.
16, Charing Cross.

Does any of that ring any bells, Colin?

This card says he was 24th Brigade RFA.
Rank BSM  Reg number 28130

then:
RA   Lieut. Maj.

Let me know what you think, Colin.
If you send me your email address I can forward the details to you (if it is this one, that is).  Plus, you can tell me where you are - bit stupid, couldn't work it out from your clue Embarrassed)

Hi Colin,
That was really kind of you to look for Bayley's Buildings - I've just had a look at the 1901 census (when Sarah Adams lived there) and is is situated between 177 and 178 Dudley Port - so it must just be above where the Tividale Hall bus stop is.
her daughter married Thomas Bayley, brick manufacturer - his father was already a brick manufacturer in Tipton. Thomas and Sarah Ann lively in Park Lane House, Park Lane, Tipton, on the 1911 census.
It is interesting to see the names of the roads in and around Dudley Port; I recognise so many of the names from the names of people living in Tipton that I have come across through my research of the Adams family.
You're quite right, it is very different today. If you lived there you must feel this even more, Colin.
I did find the local people very friendly though, when I needed to ask for directions to the Black Country Museum, etc.
Bye for now,

Sorry to butt in on here....But Paulene asked me to have a look.... Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

Now then...If you are looking for the Army chap buried in Harborne....I may have some leads... Wink Wink Grin Grin Grin

Firstly, I used to live there and have contacts with the Local History Society...

Secondly, my youngest was Christened at St Peters

Thirdly, one of my mates is the Deputy Director of the TA and RFA and cadets at Tennal Lane in Harborne, where the Army have been based for aeons...I could speak to her and get her to have a dig in the offices....

I believe that this is where your chap was...either there or at the "Blind School" which was also a military base during the war....

Colin,
Have you seen the medal card? I have a copy printed out, but don't know if you have the full information already.
Paulene Smiley

Added: I presume that if he stayed in the army atfer 1922 his army service records will not be on ancestry, but with Historical Disclosures in Glasgow.
