Hi,  My Great Great Grandfather, Malcolm John McGregor is described as Station Master on his daughters marriage certificate in 1866. His residence in 1851, on the census is Station House, Brede, Kent.
Can you throw any light on this, I cant find any info on the station or the line. 
I emailed the National Railway Museum and this is their reply:
"Thank you for your enquiry. There does not appear to have been bene a station actually called Brede. The ex South Eastern Railway line between Hastings and Ashford runs close to the village of Brede, and there is a station called Doleham Halt which is about 1.5 miles from the village. I cannot be sure if the station house that you describe would be associated with that station, however as that line only opened in 1907 it is extremely doubtful that that the address you have provided is associated with that station. It seems to be a mystery as there were no railways very close to Brede at all in the 1850’s. I am sorry I cannot provide you with any help, but if you have any further enquiries, please do not hesitate to contact us."
I was wondering if anyone could help, I did find a water pumping station in the area, would he have been called a Station Master if he worked there???

intriguing ! the 1851 address certainly says 'Station' - and his occupation is 'Station Master' - altho complemented by Pensioner Chelsea - Royal Artillery .....
wish I could read the Enumerators comment at the foot of the page ...
'End of detached part of Brede lying in ~~~~~ called Coch?~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

more and more curious - he was a Station Master in Leigh, near Reigate in 1861 ....
1861 - RG9/444; Folio: 152; Page: 10 - Leigh Parish, Village of Mentham ?

Thanks for that, I hadn't found the 1861 census.  in 1871 he is retired in Caterham, Surrey. I wonder if there is a railway station in Leigh Paris, village of Mentham or if the pumping station theory holds up. I read the cock marling walk leaflet that you sent and it does mention a water pumping station so it looks likely, i wonder if anyone who knows about names of occupations would know if a station master could be attributed to that.

The 1861 census of Udimore includes the detatched part of Brede called Cock Marling AND the house at Winchelsea Railway Station! In 1861 the "Railway Station"" SER is occupied by the Railway Station Master and his family. It would actually be Winchelsea Railway Station then!
