« on: Wednesday 25 March 09 20:33 UTC (UK) »

Please could anyone with access to the Tramore street Directory of 1894 confirm if there is a Richard Morris (grocer) operating in the town?

Many thanks in advance.

Tramore, Slaters  1894,
the only Morris is listed in the 'Private Residents' section and is

  Mrs. Morris,  Seafield

in the business and traders section the closest matches to Morris are :

  John Morrissey , grocer
Philip Morrissey , Browne's salt water, shower, reclining & Turkish baths
  Philip Morrissey, publican
  Edmond Morrissy , Railway hotel

only the business owners are listed - so if Richard worked with someone he would not be listed.

the Grocers in full are :

Byrne Johanna, grocer
Coady Mary, grocer
Connolly Murtagh, grocer
Corbett Louisa, grocer
Cusack Mary, grocer
Horton Annie, grocer
Kavanagh Margaret, grocer
Kenneally Patrick, grocer
Kirwan John, grocer
Lanigan Alice & Kate, grocers
Lodge John H. grocer & provision dealr
Morrissey John, grocer
Murphy Maurice, grocer & corn dealer
Power Ellen, grocer & fancy repository
Power Mary, grocer
Quinn Margaret, grocer & post office
Reidy Ellen, grocer
Spinks Charles, grocer

are you certain that the Morris family was in Tramore around 1894 ?

I had a search around Co. Waterford ... and there are a few in Morris entries in Waterford City...

Shane

From his birth certificate Richard Morris was born 1892 in Tramore to Richard Morris (grocer) and his wife Ellen (nee Reedy).  In the 1901 census he was living with John Power and family in Priests Road (but recorded as Richard Power).  John Power was my Great Grandfather.  My Grandfather (also) John Power recounted tales of growing up with this Dick Morris who appeared to have been supported financially but we don't know how he got to live with the Power family.  Dick Morris moved to the USA in c.1920s but returned to Tramore about the time of WW2.  My father visited him in his old age but never asked him about his birth family - he died in the late 1960s/1970s.

My father was born in Waterford and he told me of grocer and timber merchant families in Waterford named Morris - I thought when I received the birth certificate details of Richard it would provide the link to them (or possibly a connection on the birth mother side to my family) - but apparently not.  The only other 'guess' I have is that his parent emigrated some time between 1892 and 1894.  I have has a quick look at some passenger lists to USA but no luck to date. I have looked in the England and Wales records but cannot find a trace of them moving here either.

From info you may have - is there a Richard and Ellen Power in Waterford about 1894?

Thanks in advance.

regards

From info you may have - is there a Richard and Ellen Power in Waterford about 1894?

the trade directories dont usually list husband & wife, just the primary resident, business owner or trade's person for each address..

not sure if you meant Waterford City or county... but these are the Richard and Ellen entries for City and Tramore from Slater 1894 :

Waterford City

Private Residents - section

  Richard j.p. Power  John's lane

Tradespeople

Ellen Power, dress maker, 32 Parnell st
Ellen Power. pork butcher, 101 Barrack st
Ellen Power, publican, 4 Manor street

Tramore, Co. Waterford :

Ellen Power, grocer & fancy repository

The 1901 & 1911 census for Waterford  is due to be available online at some stage - looks like about 8th on the list. The schedule is a little uncertain at the moment but if the Power / Morris family was still in Waterford at that stage you shold be able to find out a bit more.

Shane

I must apologise.  I meant to ask if there a Richard or Ellen Morris in Waterford City in the directory (not Power).

Sorry again.

Excellent!  Morris & Reedy (Dick's parents surnames) as grocers in Waterford City.  Too much of co-incidence not to be them?

I will wait until the 1901 census is on line and then try to trace them at the above addresses.  Thanks for all you help.
