Trying to find the birth of Samson MINCHIN[G]TON about 1834. Father William, mother could be Miss Brown. The marriage cert here in Oz is a bit hard to read. His father was a carrier in Jersey. Thanks heaps in advance

Hi Freckle
I first looked for a birth of Samson Minchinton (and variations) around 1834 in all the Parishes and there were no Minchinton's born at this time
Now, looking at the 1841 Census I can see a William Minchinton, a carter but he is aged 65 and is living with what appears to be his wife Ann aged 55 and 4 children. If Samson was their child then Ann would have been 48 when he was born!!
So who is this Miss Brown?? Could William have been a naughty boy? I also looked for a Samson Brown in St Helier but nothing. It could have been the Jersey derivation Le Brun but there are many of these.
Do you have a date for his emigration to Oz?
Is there any way you could scan that part of the mother's name?

Hi Stewart, there are entries on a couple of online trees for William and Ann, but none of them have Samson. 48 isn't out of the question to have a child, a few of mine have been a little older. Things were different back then, physically, biologically. I haven't found him coming into Oz as yet. Only Minchinton was Isaac. Thank you for looking for me. Now, if I do this right, I should have the scan of the relavent piece from the certificate.

I've enlarged the image. Do you think it could say " name unknown". In fact if I was to really hazard a guess could it be "christian name unknown"?
Perhaps some other people might like to comment?

Hi Guernseygirl, welcome to Rootschat! This sounds like the couple I am looking for. There are no parents listed on Samson's death certificate, only that he was born in Jersey and had been in Victoria for 25 years. That means he arrived about 1858, but I have not been able to prove/disprove this as yet. Knowing how many errors can be on death certificates, the arrival date is debatable. Informant was (I think) a hospital emplyee. The marriage certificate is my only bit of information. I got my information for the mothers name from the census.

HI Freckle, Thanks for the welcome. I have that Samson was born in 1825 in St. Helier Jersey. He was Christened on 14/11/1825 but there was also a Samson christened 12/2/1826. He died 31/5/1883 in Sale Victoria, Australia aged 57. Cause of death was a tumour in the thorax and pneumonia and he was buried in Sale. Do you have information on his marriage to Margaret Kennedy?

Just to let you know that the first baptism for Samson was a private one, probably done at home if the child was sickly. The second was done at the church.

Thank you Jan and Stewart, I did know about the quick christening, seems he was very sickly. Really should have mentioned that, very sorry Jan. Seems the birth must not have been registered. I have the marriage certificate for Samson thank you Jan, 2nd marriage to Kate O'Donnell in 1871 I don't have as yet, might pay to get it though as it may tell me a bit more of his parents. Best top up my Bankcard. Also have his Will from PROV, thats what lead me to Kate. Samson had a total of 6 children, 3 to each wife. 3 died very young. Margaret died in 1871 from Epilepsy. Kate in 1921. Both wives were Irish. Well Jan and Stewart it seems at this point we know a bit more, thank you very much for your information and input.

I have another William born about 1849 in St Helier. He is William S Minchinton. He was the son of John Minchinton and Ann?. I wonder if this could be part of the link. Maybe the S stands for Samson? Regards Jan

hmmm Jan, Samsons only son was William Samson born 1878 Sale, Victoria. He married Mary Jane Ford and had 5 children, none named Samson. The other William S could be a nephew perhaps?
