I need help finding two marriages in Ohio.
1. Between 1850 and 1860, Anthony Conning married Mary Curtis. According to my grandmother's information, Mary Curtis was a widow with a daughter named Stella, but I have never been able to find a suitable Mary with such a daughter. The marriage most likely occurred in Medina County or possibly in Cuyahoga County.
2. Anthony Conning died in the late 1860s, probably 1868. His widow was remarried after 1870 and before 1880 to a man named Unknown Case. This marriage also probably occurred in Medina County. Unfortunately, Mr. Case promptly died and Mary was a widow again by 1880.

Yes, I have all the census information. The fact that I've never found Stella and the fact that Mary allegedly had no children makes me think that this is the one instance where my grandmother's information was wrong - though I haven't caught her in any other mistakes.
Also, my grandmother said that Mary Curtis's younger sister, Adelia, married Anthony Logan [my grandmother's uncle and a nephew to Anthony Conning]. I have found the marriage of Anthony Logan and Adelia and Adelia's maiden name was Curtis. This suggests that Mary was not a widow. On the other hand, maybe my grandmother was only partly wrong and Mary was a sister-in-law to Adelia.

I think it is best to continue this thread rather than to start a new one. But the questions can be modified and amplified somewhat based upon information found by a kind RootsChatter who lives in Ohio.
It seems that Mary Curtis b. [1820 in Ohio] was the daughter of Sally Curtis [abt. 1800, Massachusetts] and Unknown Curtis [Connecticut]. Mary had a sister Adelia [abt. 1836] and brothers Andrew [abt. 1830] and Samuel [abt. 1838] all born in Ohio. There may have been other unidentified siblings. The family lived in Middleburgh, Cuyahoga County, Ohio [just north of Medina County] in 1850, but Mary had left home and was presumably married by that time.
1. Who was Mary Curtis’s first husband? This marriage could have occurred in Cuyahoga or Medina, presumably before 1850.
2. When did Mary’s first husband die?
3. When did Mary marry Anthony Conning? This marriage occurred after 1850 and before 1860, probably in Medina County.
Anthony Conning died before 1870. The information found in Ohio suggests that he died in 1866. Mary married J.W. Case in June 1876 in Medina County, but he promptly died.
4. Where was J.W. Case in 1870? What was his full name?
5. When did J.W. Case die? This death occurred before the 1880 census.
In the 1900 census, Mary alleged that she had never had any children and this appears to be true. However, it seems that she may have had two informally adopted or foster children:
Stella Curtis [b. 1876] married J.B. Beckett in 1895. This marriage was performed at the home of Mary Case in Medina County. Stella died in 1901 and is buried in the Conning grave in Medina County. Perhaps Stella was a niece. John Conning [b. 1871, d. 1907] is also buried in the Conning grave. His identity is unkown.
6. Who were the parents of Stella Curtis?
7. Who was John Conning?

It is possible that Mary Curtis Conning's "2nd" husband could be Jackson Case. He has a brother, Charles, who in the 1880 census has a daughter, Stella, age 3. Maybe Charles and wife met an untimely death, and Jackson (aka J W?) and his "2nd" wife, Mary Conning, took in little Stella.
Looks like Jackson may be too young for Mary, though. What do you think?

Hi Genealiza-
I found the same information and had the same doubts about the age difference. The other thing that bothered me was how would Stella Case wind up being called Stella Curtis?
I am currently working on the theory that Stella was the daughter of one of Mary's brothers - either Andrew or Samuel or some other unknown brother. I haven't found her yet, though. Maybe Stella or Estelle was originally her middle name.
I have had no luck with Joh[n] Conning either. He is an even bigger mystery. The only Connings I know of who came to the US were Janet and Anthony. I am surmising maybe this John Conning was a more recent arrival from Scotland - some sort of cousin or nephew. But I haven't found any trace of him entering or living in the US.

To make Stella even more confusing, her birthplace is variously reported as Kansas, Ohio or Nebraska.
In 1900, she is with her husband Joseph Beckett and children Claude and Violet; her birthplace is recorded as Kansas.
After Stella died in 1901, the children apparently went to live with an aunt and uncle [James and Anna McKay] and were with them in 1910. Their mother’s birthplace was recorded as Ohio.
In 1920, Violet reported her mother’s birthplace as Nebraska and Claude reported it as Ohio.

Also, Violet's middle name was Estelle so it seems likely that her mother was also Estelle, shortened to Stella.

Wife, Mary inherits all, except that at either her decease or intermarriage (as written), that property not mentioned as specifically hers, shall be split into the following shares:
To: sister, Jane Ritchman, 16 shares
Robert W. Logan, 12 shares
Thomas Logan, 8 shares
Andrew Logan, 6 shares
Jane Prouty, 2 shares
Anthony Logan, 1 share
John Logan, 1 share
In case of the decease of either Robert W, Thomas or Andrew Logan, without children, the shares of said deceased shall belong to the survivors.
He appoints wife, Mary, executrix
His inventory was taken 5 May 1866 and the final account of the estate was 14 Sep 1867

Chester Prouty produces the will of Mary C Case to the probate court.
The three witnesses and her doctor were called to answer questions as to whether she was in her right mind when the will was written.
Chester Prouty names the following:
Curtiss: brother--address unknown, not a resident of
Ohio
Albert Bishop: grand nephew, resident of Mallet Creek
Neuman Sabins: grand nephew, resident of Lorain, Ohio
After the usual paying of debts etc, the following paragraph appears, paraphrased:
It is my will that the balance of my property go to and vest in My Beloved Grand Children Claud and Violet Becket, to share and share alike. If one should die, then both shares to the survivor.
written, 23 May 1901 Mary C. Case
It was in probate 24 June 1902 and there is a newspaper clipping of a legal notice: To James A Curtiss, a resident of Firth, Nebraska and guardian of James Claud Beckett and Violet Beckett, regarding the claim of abt $130 against the estate.
She didn't seem to have too much left when she died, maybe a couple of hundred dollars.

There were no other marriages for a Curtis(s), Conning in the marriage indexes at the courthouse. The actual listing of the marriage to J. W. Case is as written in a previous email. There is no other information on the original listing.
Hope this helps fill in some of the blanks.

Sister, Jane Ritchman must be Jane Richmond. I've been wondering for years how the Richmonds connected to the Connings and Logans. All I knew from my grandmother was that there was a cousin named Marion Richmond, whose family I have found and her mother was Jane.
Too bad g grandfather John Logan only got one share.
Looks like I can trace Stella now.
What a wonderful wekend of digging I have ahead!

I stumbled on to this blog while reserching my Curtis ancesters and would love to exchange information on this Mary Curtis family.
Mary Was the daughter of Joel W Curtis who married Sally Hulet in 1817 in Portage Co., Ohio.
The family lived for the most part in Cuyahoga Co., Ohio.
The family is as follows
