Arrgh. I've blown my allowance on Scotlandspeople trying to solve this myself from across the seas but now hope some good Samaritan will bail me out.
I know that my John Scott in question was born July 1, 1869 in Hermiston, Lilliesleaf, Rox, (son of Robert Scott and Jane (MS) Scott). I can't find him in census reports but i have found him as witness to his parents deaths so i know he was living on Wellington Street in Hawick in 1908 and still there in 1922. But I know nothing more of him?
Did he marry? Have children? His trade? Where did he die and when?
Any help appreciated as I'm now stumped?
Merv

Amazing. I had earlier download from Scotlanspeople the 1908 Death cert of his father where John had signed as witness. John gave his address as 13a Wellington Road, Hawick. You've certainly found him and his family.
When his mother died in 1922 he again served as witness but had moved to 16 Wellington Road.
You found him and now I know of his wife and children. Wonderful stuff.
I was surprised I couldn't find him later.....not even his death record or a cemetery marker? Any suggestions?
Thank you Monica and Alan

Hi Merv
Alan has already found his 1939 death certificate in Hawick from the information he posted earlier
There is a death showing for a Bessie Simpson/Scott in 1927 (b.1869) in Hawick which is likely to be John's wife. Given that he reported his mother's death in 1922 and showed as living in Hawick likely this is the correct death for his wife.

Yikes. I absolutely missed Alan's posting! Thanks for being so polite in directing me to it. Alan please accept my apologies. I've now downloaded that death cert and it's a great resource for me.
Thanks to you both for painting a very nice picture of what happened to this family. A day earlier I was completely nowhere and at my wits end.
There are no less 18 Roberts, born about 1897, who married in Rox. in that 1920-1930 range. If you haven't given up on me, can you somehow point me to the right one?
Dimwit.

Hard to find son Robert's marriage without starting with some assumptions...anything else would be too horrible!
His parents remained in Hawick. When he reported his father's death in 1939, he gave an address in Hawick (from Alan's details: 7 Wellington Road Hawick). Did he also marry in Hawick?! There are five marriages showing on line at SPin Hawick between 1917-33 and the cut off date for marriage searches on SP.
The other route open, which is not practical with you I think not being UK based, would be a look up of the electoral roll for these years at that address which would I imagine at least show a first initial for his wife (assuming he married ).

I've been pondering this and wonder if there is another route for me as well.
Since we now know that John Scott died in Dec 11, 1939 at Weens Cottage, Hobkirk...after a working life as a grocer in Hawick...I wonder if it's at all possible to track down an newspaper obituary? Any ideas who I should contact for that?
