Maggie Allan/Pirie - 1898
« on: Thursday 17 February 05 20:40 GMT (UK) »

My grandmother was married at 4 Canal Lane, Aberdeen on the 31st December 1898. She appears to have given her name as Maggie A A Pirie but her parents are shown as George and Isabella Allan and we always knew her as an Allan. There is, however, the name M S Pirie given after the names of George and Isabella in the column of the certificate for the names of parents. The ceremony appears to have been conducted by a minister of the Trinity Congregational Church.
Can anybody shed any light on this ? Is it possible that my grandmother's father had remarried somebody called Pirie and if so can anybody please find any evidence of this ?
I would be so grateful for any information.
I remember my mother often referred to cousins called Hefferan or Heffernan or something similar. I have a photograph taken in Aberden in the 1920s of my grandparents with their children and the Hefferan family including Mr & Mrs Hefferan and their children Harry, Alec, Dolly and Teddy, one of whom had a restaurant in Pinner, Middlesex (my hometown) many years ago.

Hi Barry Emmott '
It appears that Maggie Pirie, was illegitimate,
her mother was Isabella Pirie,
(Isabella Pirie , Married, George Allan, 1884 St Nicholas.)

Regardsing Maggie............
In the mother's column, they put their married name , and then M.S. is the maiden surname, of the mother  which was Pirie.
The scots were very honest about such things.
The next thing would be to go on scotlandspeople and get the marriage in 1884, and then you will know their parents, you could get the 1891 census as well and see little maggie at home and where she was born, or you could get the 1901 census and she her info, with her husband.  Then look for the great grandparents deaths.

Thanks, Kenjo. I found them (I think) in 1891 at C1891_168_02_043_000_2_013Z (Aberdeen, Old Machar, Rosemount) - George Allan, head, marr + Mary do, wife, marr + Margaret do, Daur, 9 scholar so it looks as if she wasn't illegitimate but her mother possibly died. I couldn't find any record of Mary Allan's death though, nor could I find the record of the marriage you referred to. Having spent £12 getting images that were mostly irrelevant, I'm taking a breather. I haven't found Margaret's birth but it is made difficult because in the 1901 census she is shown (at King Street Barracks - her husband, John Greenwood, was in the Gordon Highlanders) as having been born in Aberdeenshire, Fraserburgh but I can't find any Margaret Allans born there in the timeframe of 1879-1883 (she was 17 at marriage 31/12/98). The only thing I know for certain was her birthday which was 20th July but I don't know which year or where and unfortunately the date isn't one of the choices given.
Any further help or advice would be most welcome.

Hi Barry Emmott,
I have gone into scotlandspeople too. This is what I have found for you.
[Birth
Margaret Ann Elrich Pirie, Illegitimate,  born 5 pm, at 52 Mid Street, Fraserburgh, Aberdeen. on the 20th July 1882.....
Mother Isabella Pirie, Domestic Servant.
Isabella did try for Paternity of the father sometime the next year.

MARRIAGE
ISABELLA PIRIE to GEORGE ALLAN
on the 20th January 1884, at 46 Regent Quay, Aberdeen.
George Allan General Labourer, 21yrs.living at 3 Canal Lane Aberdeen.
Isabella Pirie, 22yrs, Domestic Servant.living at 8 West North St, Aberdeen.
Georges father was John Allan and mother was Jessie Allan Maiden name Thain.
Isabellas father was Robert Pirie and Mary Pirie Maiden name Johnston.
TAKE NOTE OF GEORGES ADDRESS.................above.

Birth
Isabella Pirie 9/4/1860 Strichen
Mary Ann Pirie 18/5/1858
Bathia Pirie 24/2/1862
father of above Robert Pirie
mother Mary Johnston ..they married 3 Dec 1857 Strichen.

I feel quite sure the above certificates are correct. Even though it makes Margaret 16 and a half when she married.
But for her to be born the date you mentioned and also in the right town and also, when she married , she used the name Pirie,  which was her  mothers maiden name.
If you did find the right Allan family in the 1891c she will probably be listed as an Allan, George would have excepted her as his own.   (not sure if you have found the right family though)
But when they marry they do tell the truth.
If you want these certificates, I can send them jpeg. to you.
I also have the Pirie family in the 1881census in Fraserburgh.
I'll list the children later.
I have to go.
Love to hear your opinion.

More children of Robert Pirie and Mary Johnston.
Margaret Pirie 21/2/1865 Fraserburgh
Robert Pirie 14/12/1866 Peterhead
Christian Pirie 21/7/1869 Fraserburgh
Catherine Pirie and Ann Pirie born 17/9/1871 Fraserburgh.
They had more children, later according to the 1881 census.
but I can't get birth dates, for them after 1875 on IGI.

There father Robert Pirie was probably born 2/8/1831 Rathen
father Peter Pirie and  Ann Allardyce, they married 5/12/1830 Rathen.
Other children they had.
James Pirie 23/6/1833 Rathen
Alexander Pirie 1/1/1836 Rathen.

Grin I already said WOW - what more can I say ? Fantastic !! Thank you so much, I just wish the English system was as efficient in tracking down Maggie's husband. I may have to go direct to the Gordon Highlanders to get more info on him !!
