Anyone who is interested in life in Cornwall  should get a copy of A L Rowse 'A Cornish Childhood'. I think its a lovely book, about life in a mining community, written by a famous Cornish historian. Truro Books on- Line have paperback copies for  around £8.

Thanks for the info. I've recently found out my great great grandparents (Trythal/Trithal and Martin) came from copper mining families in Cornwall. Will send off for the book!

Much of what he writes about is located in St Austell which is some way from the copper mining distict but it gives a very personal view of what life was like in the early 20th C and I dont suppose that varied much across the county.
A.L Rowse  wrote a number of other books about Cornwall and was a Elizabethan expert.

Philip Payton from Exeter University has written extensively on Cornwall and his work is very well researched.   Many of the books are very detailed and therefore not something you read endlessly unless you have the time and concentration nonetheless excellent material for those seeking insights into Cornish culture.

I know what you mean. Most books like that are easier if you dip into them rather than read from cover to cover!
There is masses about Cornish mining on-line these days.
good hunting!

Good Morning Foxy

I am currently reading the series entitled "Cornish Studies" edited by Philip Payton and produced by the University of Exeter Press.   There are currently 15 in the series and they have been produced over the last 14 or so years.   They are very wide ranging in their look at cornish culture, heritage, traditions and language.   For the novice researchers some of it especially in regard to the issue of language is heavy but if you make the time to 'wade' through it you will find it very interesting.
