John SHAW - Devon to Canada
« on: Saturday 04 July 09 22:48 UTC (UK) »

oh this wonderful option is so going to help me find my ancestor born in Devonshire....but first i have to find out which parish. that is going to be a tough one.

hopefully i can find out when he emigrated to Canada and maybe british records will give more information.

But I will be sure to be back if i find a parish name.

Moderator Comment: Split from Devon Online Parish Clerks - free assistance thread as it has becomne a query.

ok dob7 where goes.

i didn't bother with name with my first post as it is so very common and doubted that anything could be found. have been looking in  British censuses for john shaws trying to compare birth years and locations but could find nothing firm.

his name John Shaw..our records show he was born either 1824 or or 1831 Devonshire.
He was married and had some kids. don't know anything more about his family there except there may have been 5 kids (rumour).

he came to canada we think sometime in 1870 as found him on 1871 Census in Ontario. religion showed C of E. occupation: painter

found info that he purchased an assisted fare ticket in Toronto on Jan 3, 1870 which said he left Liverpool and landed Portland Maine.

he married again in Ontario and from there on we have him. his CDN marriage record said he father's name was Thomas who could have been Irish.  Mother's name not remembered.  also...again occupation: painter.

if there is a miracle that you can find him...i think i would just up and die!
thanks

OK, if you're certain he was born in Devon, your best option is to obtain the Devon FHS baptism index for the surname SHAW. This covers the period 1813-1839. It will give parish of baptism, baptismal names, father/mother's names and father's occupation and abode. To do this, go to http://www.devonfhs.org.uk/indexes.htm and follow directions.

YES....i just rec'd message from them. saying they found 2 in baptisms and 3 in 1861 census. at one penny per entry it works out of very little and basic chg of 3 british pounds i guess i have to pay. bt worth it...tho baptisms for that period said MOST parishes. i hope my john's parish is included. else it have to look for more.

of course there are some there...but are they the right ones...will be difficult to tell.

so i will send payment and see what happens. will surely get back to you with results.

SHAW is not really a common Devonshire name, so I'm not surprised there weren't very many. The parishes which aren't included are, by and large, available on the IGI which can be searched online.
