Cowherd family- completed
« on: Friday 27 March 09 14:06 GMT (UK) »

I am researching the Cowherd family which originated from Hugill Staveley. My earliest known ancestors are John (1795-1857) & Elizabeth (1796-1877) - John was the miller living at Middle Reston and I believe went bankrupt in the 1840's. His son Richard (1837-1915), my gt gt grandfather was a Police Inspector.  Richard moved around a lot, mainly Westmorland and lancashire. In 1899 he had a son George by his third wife Alice in Kendal. Richard died in Kendal? I would love to know if there are descendants of George still living in the area and also more about the early Cowherds in Hugill Staveley.

Hi!

Many thanks for all the info. Thomas Hayton Cowherd, the corn dealer is definitely mine - he is a nephew of my gt gt grandfather. Also the bankrupcy details of John Cowherd is much appreciated. I don't think that William Westmore kirkham is my family but I maybe wrong..........the research continues.

Hi Everyone!

Just to add to my first post - I am also interested in finding information about Thomas Cowherd (1861-1942). He was the first son of Richard Cowherd the Police Inspector. Thomas was a school teacher at the elementary school in Upper Allithwaite and then became Headmaster at Broughton Grammar School, Preston. Does anyone have any info on either Thomas or the two Schools?
