Hi
Hannah Oliver had an illegitimate son Benjamin Carley Oliver in 1800, baptised in Warbleton. I have been told and have seen on various family trees a Stephen Carley Oliver born 1802 to Hannah in Warbleton but there is no baptism in the Warbleton parish register. I am trying to prove once and for all his parentage but it is not proving easy.
I have checked non conformist records (Hannah had her fourth child Elizabeth Harriet Message baptised at the local chapel in 1823) but no luck either under Carley or Oliver.
I can find census records for Stephen Oliver born 1802 in 1851 and 1861 in Warbleton, Sussex where he says he was born. I have on order his marriage certificate for marriage to Hannah Hollands 1842 which is under the name Stephen Carley Oliver.
Incidentally I believe Hannah Hollands is sister to the girl who married Benjamin. another clueis on the 1851 census HO107 1638 350 23 his daughter is called Mary Message Oliver.
Hannah Oliver married Richard Message in 1807. Is it at all possible that a child would have gone unbaptised in 1802? Or can anyone suggest another way that I have missed of proving his parentage.

Perhaps the person responsible for recording the Baptism simply failed to do so.

One of my great something grandmothers did not get baptised until she was 22 years old. It was just before she married so presumed the vicar would not marry her unless she was baptised. So it may be worthwhile looking outside the normal time frame.
Her two sisters aged 19 and 12 were baptised at the same time.

Thanks for that modem, I will try that, I hadn't thought that maybe he was baptised later but you are right as it is a possibility. I certainly have other adult baptims on the tree.

Received a copy of Stephen's marriage certificate today, his father is Benjamin Carley, Cordwainer who fits with the man Hannah reputedly had the two children by. So I am assuming he must be son of Hannah.
So I wonder where he was baptised??
