You have been told that James' father was George. The GRO index indicates otherwise. You need to buy James' marriage certificate to Ellen Foster to get confirmation of who his father was.

There's no point in keep posting the same request. Until you have documentary evidence as to his father's name, which I think was David, it's all speculation

Well that's a turnround from being 100% sure, then pretty sure, that James' father was George! Have you been given further information?

Much of this early 20th century research can be done yourself in exactly the same way that we would do it - by searching on www.freebmd.org.uk

If you search for Ellen Foster born 1805-1815 you'll find loads - but there's one in Hitchin in 1911. This may be her. Do you know when she died? There's an Ellen Webb died in March 1994 in Hitchin district, aged 82, birth 4 July 1911, which fits.

As you don't have any other information regarding Ellen it's vital that you obtain certificates otherwise there's every chance you'll be researching the wrong person.

You need her marriage certificate to James Webb, to get her father's name (this will also clear up the question of James' father), and then the 1911 birth cert which will confirm whether or not she was the Ellen who married in Hitchin.

David

PS I'll check out David Webb after breakfast

Later, breakfast done. There are too many David Webbs in the 1901 census in Cambs to be sure which one married Ethel Tatham. Once you've got James and Ellen's marriage cert confirming that his father was David you need to get David and Ethel's 1910 cert which will give his father's name. Then I stand a chance of finding the right family in 1901. Perversely it's often easier and cheaper to research in the 1800s rather than the 1900s, as once you find a family in the 1901 census it's often a simple job to trace them back to the early 1800s.

You can use Freebmd just as easily as I can. Gertrude (if you spell it as GUrtrude you'll get a nil result) has a birth showing in 1908 in Hitchin.

You can then use the 1911 census index at http://www.1911census.co.uk/ to find the family. If you want the full result you have to pay as it's only pay per view at the moment; we all have to pay to see the entry.

When you've found her - put in Gertrude Foster Hitchin, you can then search again to get the rest of the family by searching against Foster Hitchin and add Gertrude in the Other members of the household box. You'll then find that Christopher aged 3 was another member of the household

You then go back to freebmd and put in the name of the father, and the christian name of the mother to find their marriage. It was in 1906 in Hitchin.

The only way you'll learn is to do it yourself, and it's much more satisfying
