I've just had a look on the freebmd for years 1870 to 1874 and only one John Brunt birth comes up for the district Chesterfield, which would cover Eckington.
June 1872 district Chesterfield, vol 7b page 613 John Brunt
This would give you his parents' names. If you get it please let us know the names, we're always very interested

Hi, This research is just an idea - you should check with the various Registration Certificates.
In 1871 you have John & Hannah E Brunt with their family on the Census Tracing John Brunt born abt 1842 Whitwell, Derbys from the earliest Census he could be on you get:-
1851 Census HO107/2122 Folio 531 Pg 33:- Brunt Farris (actually JARVIS) widow Head 39 Whitwell " Elizabeth D 13 " " George S 12 " " JOHN S 9 " " Thomas s 7 " " Ann D 5 "
(the name JARVIS must have a connection) Jarvis was Bpt 18.1.1812 Whitwell son of John & Hannah (IGI information)
1861 Cenus RG9/2535 Folio 58 Pg 12 BRUNT JOHN Servant 19 Carter Whitwell working and living in the same household is Haddock Elizabeth " 21 House Servant Eckington.
Possible birth Registration Hannah Elizabeth Haddock Sept. Q 1841 Chesterfield 19 467
More evidence is the birth:- JERVIS BRUNT HADDOCK March Q 1862 Chesterfield 7b 535
The Marriage previously posted June Q 1864 Sheffield, has a missing bride the only way to discover this is to go through all the marriages on Ancestry.co.uk. for June Q 1864 looking for a marriage marked Sheffield, if you do not wish to buy a certificate.
It is important to look at the actual Census Sheet for 1881 RG11/3441 Folio 27 Pg 48 John Brunt is not listed as "Stepson" it states "ADOPTED SON", it is quite possible that Thomas Lakin with whom he is living saved him from entering an institution. It is doubtful if there was an actual adoption - just keeping him until he is able to work etc. Jarvis Brunt, his brother, is also living with Thomas Larkin, however having no family connection to the head of the household he is only shown as a Lodger.
Hope this helps Spendlove

Hi Silvery The Birth certificate and Marriage cert for John Brunt have arrived and I thought I'd let you know the details seeing as you were kind enough to help me.
My Gt Grandfather John Brunt was born 30 March 1872, at Eckington, his mother is recorded as Hannah Elizabeth Brunt formerly Haddock, occupation of father Colliery labourer. I'm not sure how this fits in with the introduction of Hulley as her surname, but I guess it may well fit in with the theory that that she may have been married previously before marrying John Brunt (snr) and then moving in with Thomas Lakin and that Jarvis was child from original marriage.
John Brunt coal miner aged 26 married Mary Marsh aged 20 on 10 July 1897 at Eckington church. Bother Johns father John Brunt (coalminer)and Mary's father Charles Marsh (brickmaker) were deceased at time of the marriage.
I've have not had much chance to delve any further as yet but one thing did strike me straight away was the 1861 census which shows the following people at Marsh Lane Eckington William Walker Head Wid 34 Farmer 50 acres Alexander B Walker Son 8 Scholar John Brunt Serv unmarried 19 Carter born Whitwell Elizabeth Haddock Servant It states she was married but husband does not seem to have been around that night!
Thanks very much for your help Dave
