Society Schoolmaster

Can anyone help? Recently while researching my family tree an ancestor is listed as a Society Schoolmaster.  Does this mean a teacher or is it anything different.  As this was in the 1861 Census and he was already in his 60's what form of training would be required for him to be qualified as a teacher? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I've a feeling that he'll have been a teacher for the Society for the Propogation of Christian Knowledge (SSPCK) - founded in 1709 in Edinburgh.  Wickipedia give a concise description of their work.

Hello Steve,

Thank you so much for your help.  I have now e-mailed my details to the above Society and hope to hear from them soon. This has been a great step forward.  Fingers crossed and thanks again.
