History of Royal at Dockray?
« on: Monday 30 March 09 07:48 UTC (UK) »

Can anyone help me with history of the Royal Hotel at Dockray. I've tried googling and looking on the hotels website but it doesn't mention the age and history of the building. My ancestor Edward Martin was proprietor in 1851 but I can't find any background information about the building.

Hi

Found this little snippet on a site about dining pubs, will keep looking.

'The Royal Hotel at Dockray dates back to the 16th century and Mary Queen of Scots and Wordsworth both visited here'.

Thanks at least now I know the age of the building. Explains why there is an old inn sign in the photos that has the Scottish coat of arms too. Thanks.

Hi

I have just been looking at a book we have on pub walks in the Lake District. The Royal is mentioned in that although once again not much.

It says that it is a 16th C coaching inn. It's trade was from the many merchants travelling north and south over the Scottish border and suggests that this a possible explanation as to why it has the Scottish coat of arms you mentioned over the door.

A little more but not a lot I'm afraid.

Thanks anyway. You'd think the hotel itself would give some info.
