Who knows of a place called Auburn?? I found it on 1841 census in Narborough, Leicestershire.
I understand that it is merely an area in the village of Narborough and not a street name.
Listed is a school with 40 or so boarding boys - the name of their schoolmaster was called Mr Wills. Can anyone throw any light on this topic?? Please help.

Hi Diddy thanks for the details, it does at least establish that there was a school. What I really would like to know about, is the school.
Thanks a lot.

Hi Dddy, I have checked out the site you mentioned re Ladybird books, also theNarbrough village site. They had the 1851census that showed the school was still there as Auburn House.
Will also try the library sometime. Pamela

Hi, I just spoke to my hubby who has spent all his life in Narborough area, he says the only Auburn he knows of is Auburn garage which is on the main Narborough road into town. It was on the site where the Honda garage is now in Narborough. Val

To join the discussion re Auburn in Narborough, in 1881 census my great grandfather (who was a local police constable in the village) lived with his family at an address named Auburn Place. Unfortunately i am no wiser as to where exactly this was located, perhaps at the site of the present Honda garage?

Greetings totally leicester
Thank you for your comments. At least from this I know that Auburn Place was still there in 1881, and it wasn't just the school that was called Auburn Place. As I said, my gt gt grandfather was at school there in 1841. I'd really like to know more about the school but can find nothing. Oh well!
Are all your folks from Leicester? The majority of mine were, in fact some used to live in Granby Street at a time when one of them was a grazier there!! Near Dover Street.
Anywy thanks again

Hello Luna, yes my roots are very much in Leics and Rutland, many of my forebears being involved in agriculture work mostly in the south and east of the county, then from the1870,s onwards more in the Leicester town area. Its interesting to try and imagine the area of Granby Street as sufficiently rural to be a grazier there, times certainly change! If i discover anything further on Auburn Place i will be sure to let you know.

Found out a little more info. According to 1881 census Auburn House School had a headmaster (complete with his wife and five children) by the name of Howard, a 22 year old governess, 2 assistant masters aged 22 & 19, 24 boarders, 1 cook and 3 domestic servants so it must have been a fair sized building! Interestingly the next door address is also given as Auburn House School, but uninhabited! Not sure what to make of that. The next four households are all Auburn Place, my great grandfathers family, then the next three all have at least one frame work knitter (stocking) living in each. The last address in this row is Auburn Cottage where a stone merchants agent and his family lived with one domestic servant. Don't know how much of this you might already know or indeed how useful it is in finding out about the school, but here it is anyway!

Hello TL, Thanks for extra info. it's all interesting and builds up a wider picture.
In 1841 the schololmaster was Mr George Wills. One of his sons (not on 1841 census) went into publishing and he is the Wills of Hepworth and Wills of Ladybird books fame, Loughbrough. I don't have the full details to hand but somewhere i have the name of the 'Ladybird' Wills from another census.
I didn't know the name of the later headmaster. The school certainly seems to have grown in size. I'll record your info.
Thanks again

Auburn Cottages were situated opposite what is now the Dovecote Pub. They did not face it but were positioned at 90 degrees from the road. Paul my husband remembers them. Val
