Hume family 1800's?? **Completed**
« on: Tuesday 31 March 09 01:55 UTC (UK) »

I am looking for information about the Hume family from scotland.
I know of Andrew Hume 1st marriage to Grace Law and second marriange to Alice Mary. He was born in Kurkcudbright and later moved to upstate NY.
His parents were John & Ellen Hume.

Our family ties in with Helen (Nellie) Hume born 1883 who married Thomas Pearson in 1909. She was raised by her grandmother Murray (?) and went to work at the Glenross house as a maid when she was 12.
Helen was first cousin to John Law Hume (Violinest on Titanic). I'm not sure which side it was on though. John L. Hume was Andrews son.

My mom and I are visiting Scotland in August and I'd love to know more history of our family when we get there!
Thanks for any help.

HI Beth

Welcome to Rootschat  Smiley

Can you give some more dates please for Andrew/Grace Law.

The only Helen Hume b. in Kirkcudbrightshire around 1883 is a Hellen Hyslop Hume, b. 28 Dec 1883 at Glaisters Bridge, Balmaclellan. Her mother was Agnes Hume, a domestic servant.

This might not be her but it's the only one that I can find no El(l)en's b. Kirkcudbrightshire.

Regards

First of all, thank you.

Andrew      B: 1865
Grace Law  B: 1866

My biggest battle has been to find Helen "Nellie" Hume parents names. Her son Robert is still alive and has given me alot of information just not that :p I have worked my way backwards and tried going backwards from her first cousin.

I am not sure where she was born but I do know she ended up in Kirkcudbright when she was 12 and met Thomas Pearson there. I believe they were married there but I am not positive. Also Thomas was from Kirkcudbright, at least that is what  he put on all the forms I have found.

I do have both a Halliday and Hyslop on my tree just not sure if they are correct.

I don't know if it helps but I have a tree on Ancestry.com that I named Carlson Family tree but I'm not sure how to link it here, it is under bethsdragon user name.

Again Thanks! I have no idea what powers you draw from but they seem to be pretty great. Smiley

Hi Beth

Thomas Pearson married Helen Hyslop Hume on 16 Feb 1911 (not 1909 as you have) at 67 High Street, Kirkcudbright. Church of Scotland banns.

Her mother was Agnes Andrew(s), maiden surname Hume as the birth registration that I found. We now have to find out who Agnes's parents were.

Andrew Hume and Grace law married in Kelvin, Glasgow on 23 July 1887

Andrew's parents were given as John Hume and Ellen, m.s. Halliday, as suggested by my previous post.

Neither parent is deceased on the certificate.

If you go to the Scotlands People site www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk youmight well be able to find deaths for them which will give their parents' names.

It's pay to view but very reasonable. An index search and view/download of the certificate will cost 6 credits (1 credit = 20p)

There appears to be a reasonably thorough tree on Ancestry called 'Mark Preston's Ancestors' this gives information about your Hume family.

I can't access the full tree at the moment because that area of the site is 'undergoing maintenance'

PS - I could continue with this but, given that you appear to have access to the census indexes via Ancestry and by using Family Search and Scotlands People, you can get all the information that you need

 Cheesy Again, Thank you!
I have searched Ancestry and didn't find a third of what you have. I'm excited to go home and put all of this in tonight and see what I can find with this new info. I hope I become better the more I search.

Grin
You just solved one of my mysteries. We knew Nellie went to live with her grandmother between 6 mos-1 yr old after her father died and her mother went elsewhere to work. We knew her mother later remarried an Andrew but we couldn't figure out why everyone called Nellies grandmother "Grama Murray"!

Fantastic.

I'm starting to think Agnes wasn't married to Nellies father, scandalous. ha ha

You may never know how much this little piece of info means to my family but believe me it means alot. My great uncle (nellies son) is thrilled to see things that remind him of his childhood and I have a feeling my trip is going to be even better for the info.
