Has anyone come across Peppards or sometime spelt Pepper in their searches. I know that John Peppard was living in the Baltinglass/Hackettstown area on the Wicklow/Carlow border during the 1860's,as I have his info from the birth cert of his son, also called John (my ggrandad).

can you give john's dob and his mothers maiden name, it would help in the search.
regards mary.
Mary, Details confirmed from Parish Records P4191 listed as Peppard at marriage although name interchanges to Pepper. Married Harriet Sophia Jones 28 Jan 1864 (as Pepper son of John Pepper). He was listed as a labourer living at Garretstown, Parish of Rahill, Rathvilly, Co Carlow, which is approx 10 kms from Holdenstown where Harriette lived. The marriage took place in the Registrars Office, Baltinglass, although Parish Records seem to record the marriage being in the Church of Baltinglass. His father is listed as John Pepper, also a labourer. Marriage was by license. They lived in Clough, Baltinglass, Wicklow after they were married, moving to Killalish in Feb 1864 (birth of John) and to Dublin in 1869 and moved back to Baltinglass, Co Wicklow for the birth of Julia and Margaret. In 1873 they lived in Kiltegan, Co Wicklow. I can't find any trace of his father John, this is the link I need to get back further. Rory T

I've since discovered that he was living in Baltinglass in the late 1890's but is not on the 1901 Census. He is not recorded in the death records so where could he have gone? His son, also John, was living in Dublin in 1901.

Hi, I might have been lookig in the wrong area for my Peppard/Pepper ancestors (I was looking in Carlow/Baltinglass area. However, I now suspect that there might be some connection to the above areas in the early 1800's. Has anyone come across the names in their research.

No need to start a new topic, Rory. I've merged your earlier Peppard/Peper thread and changed the title.

Hi there! Does anyone have any information on or connection to a Matthew Peppard/Pepper, born county Wicklow about 1824? He married Honora Smullen in January 1850. They had a son James, and emigrated to Australia on the "Marshall Bennett" in 1851. Their daughter Mary was my great grandmother.

Hi Emjay, On another site I had a connection which outlined Matthew's family. He was a goldminer when he emigrated to Oz. Himself and his wife Honora (b 1828) had 8 known children: James (1850), Mary (1854 - 15 Jul 1933), Ellen (1856), Thomas (1856 - 1856), Margaret (1858), William (1863) and Letitia (1868 - 15 Aug 1888). James was the only child born in Wicklow, the rest were all born in Bendigo, Victoria, Australia. As far as I can determine John's parents were John Pepper/Peppard (b.1800 Rathdrum, Wicklow - d. abt 1889 Dublin) and Elizabeth Sharpe (b. 02 Dec 1807 Knocklishen, Rathvilly, Co Carlow - d. Bet. Apr - Jun 1880 Dublin), they married in Rathdrum, Co Wicklow on 12 May 1822. Their other children were: John (1838 Garrettstown, Rahill, Rathvilly, Co Carlow- 21 Nov 1926 31.1 Old Kilmainham, Usher's Quay, Dublin (my GGgrandfather) Joseph (b. abt 1840 Baltinglass, Co Wicklow) George (b. abt 1840 Baltinglass, Co Wicklow) Jane ((b. abt 1855 Baltinglass, Co Wicklow - d. after 1876) Hope this is of assist to you RoryT

Thank you so much RoryT, you've been a great help. I really appreciate all the information, I couldn't find either Matthew or Honora on the Irish BDM indexes.

Hi Emjaye –
My gg grandmother was Mary E. Pepper, born 1819 in Avoca, Wicklow. Another researcher has told me that her father was Matthew Pepper, but I have no proof of that. Perhaps your Matthew Pepper could have been her brother. What do you think?
My gg grandmother married Benjamin Henry Chapman [b. 1820 in Ballyloughlin, Wicklow] and they emigrated to Canada in about 1843-4. Later they moved on and settled in Wisconsin, USA.

Hi Erato,
Very hard to say without verification, which I haven't been able to find on any of the Irish BMD on-line databases. Going by the information from RoryT, it is possible that John Pepper & Elizabeth Sharpe had another daughter. Their marriage was in 1822, my Matthew was born about 1825 and the next child, John, isn't born until 1838 - quite a gap.
RoryT - do you still have the details of that previous connection you mentioned?
