How can I be sure?
« on: Wednesday 09 September 09 19:29 UTC (UK) »

Hi there,
I'm sure this is a problem for most of us once we get back before 1837 and the start of civil registration, but how can I be really sure I have identified the right ancestor??  According to various parish records, John Chalker "of Weymouth" & Eleanor Stroud "of Melcombe Regis" married 30 Jan 1800 at Wyke Regis, Dorset.  Eleanor was baptised on 12 Aug 1781 at Melcombe Regis, the daughter of Richard & Ann Stroud "at Radipole".  Stroud was not a common name in Melcombe Regis at this time and so I'm happy that the marriage of Richard Stroud & Ann Ellis there on 21 Apr 1771 is that of Eleanor's parents (other children baptised at Melcombe were: Mary 1771; Jane 1773; John 1775; Philip 1778; Richard 1783 and Elizabeth bur 1787).  Richard didn't come from Melcombe Regis and there are no Stroud baptisms in the parish before Mary in 1771.  I've found a baptism for a Richard Stroud at Bradford Peverell on 23 Mar 1745, son of Philip and Eleanor (both names appear in Richard's children) but I'm at a loss as to how I can PROVE this is the Richard who marries Ann Ellis at Melcombe in 1771.  When I've come across men who appear out of nowhere and marry a local girl before I've just stopped the line at that point but I'm getting to the point where all my lines are stymied - would be grateful for any tips to help move things on.

Do you have  burial details for Richard?   Dorset  burials on

http://www.findmypast.com/home.jsp

include an entry for a Richard Stroud in 1828.  The free search shows an estimated  birth year of 1745 (which means that the burial details give his age at death).

If the place where he is buried is a place where you would expect your Richard to be it would be a step to proving that he is Philip and Eleanor's son. If you find a likely Ann Stroud buried in the same place that would also help.

If Richard who died in 1828 wrote a will, that would also be useful.  (Dorset Archives is probably the place to look).

Hi,

Have you checked the records available on the Dorset OPC site?

Thanks for the replies,

toni - that's an interesting slant, am relying on the IGI for PR for Bradford Peverall at the mo so no burial info but I'm planning a trip to the RO in the not too distant future so will definitely follow this up

Galium - no, I don't have burial details for Richard or Ann, and neither seem to have been buried at Melcombe Regis.  There is another Richard & Ann Stroud couple having children baptised in Fordington in the same time frame as my Richard and Ann (but pretty sure they are not the same couple as children's baptims overlap too closely).  He doesn't seem to have left a will, Paul with the Dorset will disk did a look up for me and I've checked the catalogue at Dorset RO, frustratingly I've no clue as to occupation but most of that side of my family have been town-based craftspeople - cutlers/shoemakers/carpenters etc.  Thanks for info re FMP search, my Ancestry subscription is coming to an end and I've been wondering about trying FMP instead, so might well give that a go.

Nanny - yes, that's a great site isn't it, got a lot of coverage for the area of Dorset I'm interested in and I've been gradually working my way through all it's collection.
