John Tollerfield, born Church Knowle Dorset
« on: Tuesday 31 March 09 18:00 UTC (UK) »

Hi

I wondered if you could help me. I am trying to find the parebts of John Tollerfield b1828? Church Knowle, Dorset.

I can find him on the 1871 & 1881 cencus but not 1841, 1851, or 1861.

As far as I know he was a Tailor and spent a lot of his life in the Army, he married Ellen Hennessy on 07 Aug 1864 at St Mary, Dover, Kent, England.

I think Ellen father was called Daniel but after that I am well and truly stuck.
But cannot find anymore.

I would be greatful of any help you can give me.

John is my daughters great, great, great grandfather.

Thank you so much

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

I can find Ellen on the 1851 for Gainsborough Lincolnshire but not John

Daniel Hennessy 38  b Cork
Julia   32  b Southwark
John 8  b Bermondsey
Ellen   6  b Bermondsey
Mary A 1  b Gainsborough

I notice John was a lot older than Ellen and although they married in 1864, their eldest child in 1881 was only 9

Hi,

Have you looked for his baptism on the Church Knowle page of www.opcdorset.com ?  The census details are also available.

A copy of his marriage certificate should show the name and occupation of his father.

Hi,

The IGI have a "submitted" baptism record for a John TOLLEFIELD in Langton Matravers.

From the Langton Matravers page of the DorsetOPC site:

John Gover Tollefield   26 Feb 1826 , son of James and Jane.   James shown as a Quarrier.

In reply to your replies:
Nanny Jan, I dont think John Gover Tollerfield is the same John as mine as I have got a copy of his marriage cert and it says his fathers name is John and I have been told his mother was called Elizabeth. I will look at the site you mention and let you know if it helps.

CarolineW, Thanj you for that, I think that will help me.

Hello
As far as I can gather Ellen Hennesy is my great Grandmother--she was the mother of my grandad  Herbert (Robert Tollerfield) who was the father of my Dad Robert Herbert Tollerfield Williams born in Hull in August in 1926--are we connected in some way??

Hi

Yes we are related or should I say you are related to my Daughter, my Son and my ex-husband.

John Tollerfield and Ellen Hennessy were my ex-husband’s great, great grandparents.

John & Ellen had 7 children, they were: -

Mary Ann (1865)
William John (1872)
Frederick Charles (1873)
Daniel (1876)
Harry (1877) my ex’s great granddad.
Herbert (1879) your granddad
Job (1883)

If you look on either Ancestry.com or Genesreunited.co.uk I have my family trees,
the one on Ancestry has more detail.

I have managed to trace the Tollerfield line back to 1791, but I have become a little stuck, as there seems to be different spellings of the name Tollerfield and a lot called John.

If you know anymore I would be very interested, as I have said I have become stuck.

If you are not a member of either of the sites I have mentioned, I would happily send you a copy of the Tollerfield family tree, if you let me have your email address.

Kindest regards

Dear Karen,

It's good to see another 'Tollerfield' researcher.

How are you getting on with your research ?

I have (with help) managed to get back to the end of the 16th century, although whilst I know of the line which you are researching, I'm not 100% certain (yet) of the link into the main 'Tollerfield' line - if indeed there is one !!

Let me know if you'd like to get in touch and discuss details further.

Hi Paul Smiley

Thanks for your reply.

With regards to my reasearch, so far so good.

I have managed (like you with help) to get back to John Tollerfield b. 25/12/1791 Corfe Castle.

I know his parents were John & Elizabeth but do not know dates or places, if you have any ideas I would love to here them.

Kindest Regards

Karen

Karen,

John 1791 had a few siblings:
  Charles b. 1793
  Becca b.1795
  William b 1798 (bap @ Corfe Castle 18.2.1798)
  Charles b. 1800

Their parents were John (surprise surprise) and Elizabeth, or Betty.

I haven't yet linked this folks further back.

The information I have on John, who married Ellen is as follows:
Born in Knowle - Dorset - Tailor
Joined RA - posted to SA; christened in Langton Matravers 20/4/1824

That John also had a number of siblings:
  George b.1818
  Mary b.1821
  Job b.1826
  Elizabeth b.1831

I hope all this helps ?

Best wishes,

Paul
