Skitmore
« on: Tuesday 31 March 09 20:44 UTC (UK) »

The Skitmores moved from Norfolk to the Brighouse area in the 1870s. I understand that there may have been at least one family there before then and that they could be on the 1871 census. Rebecca, an infant, is a possibility
A look up would be appreciated.

Many, many thanks for this.
By the way , Elizabeth appears in the 1881 census , still with Mr Shingfield and described as paramour!

Hi

I have a link with this family, through the Nobbs's of Shropham. I found, what I think is this family, on the parish records at Norwich but haven's found them on Census (1881) I don't have regular access to Ancestry at the moment so can't easily delve into all records.

I remember finding a possible link to Skitmore "will have to look further into my records to find it" but may have discounted it. Oops??? Hope I've linked the right john here!

Interestingly, John Nobbs appears to have married twice, his first wife being: Mary Shingfield. I have John's parents as John Nobbs and Diana Baker.

Quite a few of John's siblings migrated to the Brighouse area where they remained and raised their families.

If anyone can throw any further light on the family, it would be much appreciated.

David,
that Mr Shingfield is described as  "paramour" would seem to indicate a knowldegeable and disapproving enumerator Roll Eyes

Hi David

I've found my other Skitmore link. Elizabeth Nobbs b: 1851 Shropham, married Joseph Skitmore b: Wayland 1850, (possibly Shropham), in 1872. Elizabeth already had a son, William Allen Nobbs, the father was likely to be one of the Allens who were prevelent in Shropham. I didn't find the Skitmores in 1881/1891 but in 1901, there is a Joseph and Elizabeth Skitmore in Yorkshire.

Hope this helps.

Hello again

I went to my local Library today, I can access the Ancestry website from there. I found some more support info but I still can't find the Nobbs or Skitmore families in 1881, as this is free to use, I've tried all kind of variations on the Nobbs and Skitmore names and searched under different childrens names but keep drawing blanks.

Can anyone help please?

Sorry for the long delay in replying Been away and computer problems. I have Joseph Skitmore b L Ellingham 1850 d L Ellingham 26 Dec 1922 married to an Elizabeth Hobbs . I now see it should be Nobbs. I have Elizabeth b in L Ell in 1850, married there in 1872 and dying there in 1942.
however their children, I all have born in Brighouse Yorkshire:
James S b 1873
William Henry b 1876
Ann Elizabeth b 1880
I have no idea when they moved back to Norfolk or anything further on their children.
