Hi everyone,

I realise this is a long shot, but does anyone have any old pictures of Middlegate Road/Street, Dewsbury.

I am looking for No. 4 Middlegate, which may have been a pub in the early 1900's.   I have looked on Google Maps and it appears to show the corner of Kirkgate, Middlegate and Low Lane, which is now vacant.

Also does anyone have any idea what Raikes Lodge may have been.  It was in Raikes Lane, Birstall Batley around 1917.

you could try contacting the Birstall/Batley news (Newspaper that is)  I'm sure they'll have some archive photos.  You could even contact the Local history library in either Dewsbury or Huddersfield.


According to nowadays the restaurant Dolcie Vita is on the current address of 3-5 Middlegate Birstall

Hi Pat
Raikes Lodge is still there as a house.  Coming up from Birstall onto Raikes Lane it is on the right hand side of the road just passed where there and some newer houses.  It is just before a right turn off down a small road to some bungalows.  If you go onto Goole maps and type in Raikes Lane and go onto the Satalite picture it is between Haworth Road and Welbeck Road.
The other question re Middlegate and Kirkgate is this also Birstall and not Dewsbury?  Again type in Middlgate Birstall and you will see that is near both Kirkgate and Raikes Lane.  There is a pub call The White Bear (I hope this is the name of it now)  There is a book with photographs of Old Birstall
