Been along The Heath six times today  Roll Eyes

I live in Little and dad lives in Great Waldingfield.

The Heath is the main road through the village B1115 from Sudbury to Lavenham.  Once you get to the Post Office Stores crossroad with Ten Trees Road and Heath Estate, the road becomes the Lavenham Road.

There are a couple of large very old houses along there, set back behind the modern ones.

Interesting query?  Have you contacted me before regarding adoption in GtW?  As I have dealt with a similar query in the past.
If not, please let me know (via PM if preferred) and I will see what I can do to help.

Pat ...

PS I saw a Google Camera Car driving along The Heath last week it stopped at the junction with Folly Road.

Sorry, I'm afraid that 'Brookwood Manor' is in fact Holbrook Hall,  the manor house for the parish of Little Waldingfield.

When it became a nursing home caring for people with dementia - the new owners gave it a new name, thus ending a long association with Holbrook Hall - the first reference to the hall was in 1327.  There have been three buildings over the years on this site with that name.  The name change is a source of annoyance to the villagers.

Several years ago I was contacted by a chap whose family ran a horse stud in the USA, he had returned to Suffolk to find his ancestral home.  Suffolk Record Office directed him to the village of Holbrook.  Unable to find a Hall there he returned to the SRO, another researcher suggested Little Waldingfield.

He parked at the pub in the village and walked the mile to Brookwood Manor, as it is the largest house in the village.  He met a care assistant leaving work and asked if he had indeed found Holbrook Hall, no she replied - this is Brookwood Manor!

He returned to the USA thinking he had not found his ancestral home - his forebears having worked in the stables, and one of them left for the USA and continued with his love of horses and caring for them and built up a successful stud.

I have a copy of 'A short history of The Holbrook Hall Estate in Little Waldingfield' pub 1982 by John F Bridges and an updated copy from 2007 outlining the history of the Hall to the present day.  It has had a lot of uses in the last few years.

Thank for thinking of the Hall Tim  Wink

I note it is some time since you posted this query but I have just found one of my husbands ancestors at an address in Gt. Waldingfield.
It would appear that children were placed with families at "The Heath"which is also mentioned as Sudbury Road. One of the houses is Laurel Villa & there is another house nearby that has children from Dr. Barnados.
I don't know if this is any help to you, we are off to the area today to  see if we can find out any more information.

Epenn Welcome to Rootschat

The Heath starts at the PO office junction with Ten Trees Road and towards Sudbury, from the PO towards Lavenham the Road becomes Lavenham Road.  It could well have been called Sudbury Road in the past, although a friend living along there has always had the address The Heath (sadly she does not live at Laurel Cottage - but that does ring bells  Undecided  )

Did you find which one was the Dr Barnardo's Home for children?

I would love to know  Grin

There  was no home run by Barnados, but I believe children may have been placed by them.

The 1901 census entry was as follows;--

Heath

Susannah Bowers  wid   72
Meannah   Bowers  dau  single  40
Octavia      Bowers  dau  single  37
Minnie   Bean         15  )
Annie Sims              9   )  Dr. Burnados Homes     place of birth u/known
Amy  M May             8   )

also on the same page

Emma Poole    wid      56
Henry C Barnes  16              )
Walter W Brewer 15             ) all boarders
Sidney S Alexander  11         )
Sidney E Tomes        6          )

1911 census

Laurel Villa

Emma Poole      wid      67
Walter Brewer  Boarder   25
Royston Clark    Visitor   12
Bertie Waghorn  Boarder  11
Reginald Derriman Boarder  7

Reginald was mistranscribed on the index as Dewman

Reginald was my husbands Great Uncle , his mother died in 1906, he was one of 7 children, 2 stayed with there grandmother, 2 went to Barnados at Barkingside, 2 girls went to Bristol to Mullers Homes and Reginald came to Suffolk. In July 1911 he was sent on to Wattisfield, but we have no idea why.

We are amazed that children were sent so far from there home, Reginald was born in Lambeth.

I havent been on this site for sometime so sorry i havent answered straight away!!
This is interesting epenn i took a peek at the 1911 census for great waldingfield to find out where grandmother was and it appears she was with a couple by the name of reeve or reeves at the heath  and over a few census they seem to have taken a number of children in of various ages  though they seem to be mostly from the london and south area of the country now i wonder why so did the famous Dr Barnardoes have something to do with it..

I may have found the property, at present un-occupied since the death of the owner a couple of years ago.

Now that you are back in touch, if you wish I will try and take a walk round to the property to check it out.  It is a large detached red brick villa.

My dad has been very poorly lately and I am a bit behind with my lookups, hoping to visit Boxford Cemetery on Sunday pm - a long outstanding look up for another very patient researcher  Roll Eyes

Hello Pat,
All this is fascinating i would like to know more about this i was hoping the 1911 census would tell me more but it didn't all it gave me was a george reeve or reeves and his wife and a nursemade and a servant looking after several children which included two babies one of which was my grandmother aged 8mths she was born in great waldingfield though some of the others came from london area and the south east..
That would be interesting to know how large house was.
My grandmother once told me her earliest memory was being held by the hand and walking down the stairs in a fairly large house she was about 2years old she beleived...
Would be good to know where all these children went ...
