Trying to trace a Mansfield burial
« on: Wednesday 01 April 09 13:32 UTC (UK) »

I don't know if anyone has access to Burial records and can help me...
I’m trying to track down what happened to a Joseph Littlewood, baptised at ‘ST.Peter and Pauls, Mansfield, Notts in 1779 of Joseph Littlewood and Elizabeth Betteridge.
If I’m right I believe he died and was buried prior to 1785…It would explain something that’s been bugging me for a while….Many thanks if you can help.

Regards

Nice one Charlotte... Grin I'm sure he'll surface somewhere..

Think i'm going to invest in a copy of the Nottinghamshire, 'Births, deaths and marriages', that have been transcribed from the main archives..., that I see is now available..

Where did you see that copy  advertised?  is it a CD?

I'm not interested in Notts data but other counties could be of interest, so i'd be glad if you can point me to where you found this..

Hi there Jaywit
If you have the time and wouldn't mind having a look to see if you could see anything, that would be fantastic and would be much appreciated.

I have been to the library this morning and I couldn't see a burial for Joseph on the fiche, but  some of the entries were so faded that I couldn't read them. To be 100% sure I think you nedd either to see the original PR at the Notts Archive or see a transcription. Sorry not to be of more help.

Hi

I have looked on the Notts Fam Hist Soc BMD CDs (available at: www.nottsfhs.org.uk) and they are well worth the money if you have lots of relatives who were in Nottm.

First of all checking I have the right family.

Marriage: Joseph Littlewood and Elizabeth Betteridge 22.3.1778 Mansfield St  Peters

Baptism: Joseph to Joseph Littlewood and Elizabeth Betteridge Born 27.02.1779 Baptised 28.3.1779
Fathers occupation Blacksmith

Others baptised around that time to Joseph and Elizabeth Littlewood:
1788 John
1790 Sanita
1793 Martha
1781 Mary
1783 Elizabeth
1785 Robert Solden
1786 Hannah

These may or may not be the correct Joseph and Elizabeth Littlewood. Sanita is a strange name for that time! She is the only one on all the records on the baptism CD!

Burials at Mansfield St Peters for Joseph Littlewood:

29.1.1769 Joseph Senior - probably your Josephs father
15.5.1840 Joseph age 84 Church St if this is the right Joseph it would make him 42 when he got married.

Was this a second marriage?

There is a marriage at Askham:

Joseph Littlewood to Ann Kirkland 30.3.1773

But maybe this is a red herring.

Good luck

Hi Jane.
Thanks so much for looking for me...It does tie in with the information i have with one exception...a quandary that i cannot seem to answer.
A viewpoint would be of great help

One quick question though. These CDs. Are they pretty comprehensive? and are they transcribed in the same format as the originals or in a searchable format under names..?

The reason why I ask is, in the past week I have been doing some reasearch in Mansfield and have found that the Robert Littlewood baptised 11.02.1785 was burried 25.02.1785. A very short life.

My Quandary is that I am descended from Robert Littlewood, from this same family...
Yes i know that statement as it is, is impossible, however..I have a copy of Joseph Littlewoods Will of 1840 that contradicts it.

I'll type an extract:

'Six Guineas rent of house and blacksmiths shop and nineteen pounds rent of Mr George Neales house and currying premises to be disposed of as follows, Elizabeth relict of the late Robert Littlewood my son to receive two pounds per quarter till her son Robert is put out to apprentice, Joseph the elder being apprentice to a Blacksmith.....'

This document is a beautiful piece of writing and goes on for two pages giving a mass of useful information.

The Robert Littlewood mentioned above married Elizabeth Thrall in 1825 and they had Joseph;1827, John;1827, Robert;1831 and Elizabeth;1834.......
and was burried in 1836 hence not being mentioned in the will of 1840.

Any viewpoints would be grately appreciated  Smiley
