Hi Peep,
your post is in a good place but I think that you may not have given us enough information to answer this, unless someone out there has a directory with the house name specifically listed.
If you know who was living there at the time (name, approximate date of birth?) then perhaps someone will be able to look them up in the 1901 census and, if they were still at the same address, by comparing neighbouring addresses or the piece description be able to locate it within Bilston.

Hello there. I have a copy of the 1891 and 1901 census. In 1891 they lived at 4 Wellington St, then in 1901 they are living at 7 Wellington Rd. I have letters from the Boer War dated 1897 to 1899 addressed to, Bowen ,The Thorns Bilston. Not very infomative I guess!

Hi peep,
had a quick look through the 1891 but did not spot a Thorns.
The Wellington Street of 1891 seems to be that part of the later Wellington Road between Mount Pleasant and Green Lanes. In 1891, only houses 1-6 were numbered. Most were not specifically identified (other than by the schedule numbers, of course), but some houses at the other end of that stretch had names.
Perhaps when they first moved into number 7, it was named Thorns?
Does anyone know when that main road became Wellington Road because, in 1891, only the short stretch mentioned above seems to be Wellington anything?

Re Wellington Road, my 1903 map shows (from Wolverhampton) Cleveland Road to bridge over canal, Bilston Road to junction with Ettingshall Road, Wolverhampton Road to turning for Bilston Cemetery, then Wellington Street. No mention of Wellington Road. Hope this helps, map was purchased from oldmaps.co.uk giraffe

I can't see how that is correct, as one of my ancestors was living in Wellington Road on the 1901 census, the numbers go up to 150 on the even side:
RG13 / 2690 Folio 158 page 32.
Number 7 is the main town side and is currently a large shop which I think sells cake decorations and/or fancy dress so it could have easily been an inn, pub or guest house. A lot of the houses on Wellington Road near townside are large detatched/semi detached and town houses.
It might be worthwhile asking someone if they can have a walk there and see if there are any names on the houses/buildings. Sam

Sorry Sam, I can only go by what it says on my 1903 map as I'm not familiar with the area, except for Ettingshall Road where my grandparents lived. giraffe

I'll try to find the 1901 Census details of the Enumeration District, and see what it says, or if anyone beats me to it . . . . giraffe

District 17 is the odd side of Wellington Road, District 19 is the even side of Wellington Road 1901 census.
