in 1859 my gg. Grandmother Isabella GLASS died in Friockheim parish of Kirkden her husband was John GLASS shoemaker (Master)
her Father is shown as John STIPHIN, Ditcher Mother as Margaret STIPHIN M.S. CLARK
since this is post 1855 I should be able to find deaths but have not been able to do so. Subsequent records show the name as STEPHEN but the death record writing is very clear STIPHIN.
There is an OPR marriage that fits John STIVEN and Margaret CLARK married 1819, March 12 at Laurencekirk.
and
John GLASS to Isabella STIVEN married 1843, December 16 at Laurencekirk.
In 1960 at Laurencekirk Independent Church, John GLASS married Margaret Watt MILNE age 28 a cousin of the above Isabella GLASS. Marriage records shows Father as James MILNE, Farm Servant, deceased Mother shown AS Jane STEPHEN not MILNE so she was maybe illegitimate
Were the OPR spellings wrong? was the 1859 death record wrong? what is the correct spelling ?
They may have been from Laurencekirk area.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Angusg
Don't be put off by the spelling variations, it is very much a sign of the times. Unlike today, spellings were not rigid and varied enormously.
You have Isabella's parents from her death cert in 1859. You have found an entry for their marriage on the Old Parish Registers in Laurencekirk. They look to have had their children there, from IGI at www.familysearch.org:
1. ANDREW STIVEN Christening: 09 NOV 1819 2. ISOBEL STIVEN Christening: 02 SEP 1821 3. MARGARET STIVEN Christening: 30 MAR 1823 4. JOHN STIVEN Christening: 13 MAR 1825 5. DAVID STIVEN Christening: 04 MAR 1827 6. JAMES STIVEN Birth: 11 MAR 1831/ Christening: 03 APR 1831 7. ALEXANDER STIVEN Birth: 30 MAY 1833/ Christening: 23 JUN 1833
Now Isabella's entry shows in 1821. As you can see, not only did surnames vary but also first names, see www.whatsinaname.net Isobel, Isabella, Elizabeth are all common variants of the same name (there are more!)
In 1851, Isabella shows a Laurencekirk birth place on the census:
John Glass 34, Shoemaker Master Employing, b. Danlappie, Forfarshire Isabella Glass 29, b. Laurencekirk, Kincardine James Glass 4, b. Logie Pert, Forfarshire Mary Glass 2, b. Logie Pert, Forfarshire William Falconer 18 , apprentice shoemaker
Address: Southgate, Friockheim
An example of a further spelling variation on Isabella's surname is from the birth registrations of two of their children:
1. STEPHEN GLASS WILLIAM GLASS Birth: 30 JUN 1856 Kirkden - Isabella's name shows as ISABELL STEPHEN 2. HUGH GALLOWAY GLASS Birth: 18 JUL 1858 Kirkden - and for this as ISABELLA STEPHEN
I would be confident in your position that you are following the right line

In respect of Margaret Watt Milne, I think her parents were married. Again with some spelling variants:
MARGARET WATT MILL 27 AUG 1831 Christening: 11 SEP 1831Logie-Pert, Angus Parents: JAMES MILL and JANE STEVEN
Other children showing to them include:
1. JEAN MILL Christening: 16 APR 1836 Logie-Pert, Angus 2. ANN MILL Christening: 08 JUN 1834 Logie-Pert, Angus
And possibly:
MARY MILNE Birth: 16 OCT 1839/ Christening: 30 OCT 1839 Saint Cyrus, Kincardine Parents:JAMES MILNE and JANE STEPHEN
This looks to be John Glass and Margaret in 1861:
John Glass 44, Boot Maker Master, b. Leracathro (?spl), Forfarshire Margaret Glass 29, b. Logie, Forfarshire James Glass 14 Mary Glass 12 Clementena Glass 9 John Glass 8 William Glass 4 George Clark 12, apprentice shoemaker
Address: Millgate, Kirkden

The John Stephen who married Margaret Clark in Laurencekirk on 12 Jun 1819 was my great great grandfather. You will find more information on this family at http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=malcolm
