« on: Thursday 02 April 09 05:04 UTC (UK) »

Huh Huh ... I cannot find where is this place in Applecross ... maybe it's an old name... The writting in this OPR entry seems clear but impossible to find this parish
Maybe I didn't read right ?

Hi Gwen

I read it as Ardcheanvan. Ard (aird)  means point and van/ban means white  in Gaelic so it is likely  to be on the coast somewhere - maybe there are some white sands  Undecided I've had a look on the modern OS maps but can't find one that fits so far.

added - I think the chean part is for cean meaning head

So they moved from the white point to the black point  Smiley

Have you tried the maps on the NLS site:

http://www.nls.uk/maps/index.html

I'd have a good look myself but I'm travelling back from the Ullapool area to Newcastle today so can't do a thorough search  Undecided

Ardchanvan shows up on Thomson's Atlas of Scotland published in 1832.

See http://www.nls.uk/maps/atlas/thomson/519.html
Select the bottom section of the county map
Just over half-way up that map, on the west coast (close to the left edge of the map) you can find Ardchanvan.

By the time of the Ordnance Survey map (first edition), printed in 1882, the name is shortened to Airdbŕn. The current OS map has it as Ardban. See current OS map showing Ardvan.
