Beckett street workhouse and training school

Anything about this institution in the 1860's would be welcome, especially the practice of sending groups of orphans to Canada.

Thanks, Lynn- very informative- am particularly looking for references to Soloman Briggs who was Chaplain at Beckett St. before emigrating to Canada.

Solomon Briggs was from Almondbury, near Huddersfield, almost as soon as he was appointed chaplain he was in trouble and this seemed to have continued for quite a while. Eventually he was made to resign in April 1856.

He was appointed on Wednesday 4th February, 1852.

All that info comes from Leeds Mercury one of  48 British national newspapers available from gale Databases, but available online at Lancashire Library.

Yes easy-if in Uk, or abroad, go to

 http://www.lancashire.gov.uk/onrl/

You will see the database on the right of the screen.  You have to join the library first, yes join it as you would any other library. They send you a library ticket, with a serial number upon it and use that number to gain access. You do have to give you home address, so they can send you the library ticket. If abroad, then they send you the ticket number online. It's all explained on the website. It's very addictive.

Thank you - the Lancs. Library site is v. useful for access to old newspapers- I have already been able to fill in some gaps in the story of S. Briggs which I will pass onto his descendants in Canada.
