Hi,

I have a entry on the 1841 census which is a bit unclear in my tiny brain. I'm hoping someone with local knowledge ( or an old map) might be able to help.

In the Parish of Lonmay:

The first entry is at Cairness - ok, that makes sense, I know about Cairness.

The next three households, including my ancestors, are at Cairnglass.

So the question is, was Cairnglass a small settlement, within the Cairness estate. Or maybe just a farm with some ag labs'cottages. Would my 4 x great grandfather have been working for the big house or might he have been a tenant farmer/crofter?

Any ideas, anyone?

Thanks, I had seen the first one of these but not the second. It's good to know that there is still a farm there but I'm still not clear on how it might have been in the mid-nineteenth century. One farm or several small crofts and various other questions.
