Godalming baptism puzzle help please
« on: Thursday 02 April 09 20:25 UTC (UK) »

Hello

Can anyone give their thoughts on this Godalming baptism puzzle please. I saw these records myself in the original PR.

Henry Howick baptisms at Godalming :
21st Dec 1757 : Henry son of William Howick & Mary his wife.
15th Sep 1758 : Henry son of William & Elizabeth.
(A note under the 1758 baptism entry states that Henry was privately baptised Dec 31st 1757).

Is this the same Henry or 2 different Henry's. If this is the same Henry then who is Henry's mother ?

Ravelin

P.S.
Godalming is supposed to be covered on the IGI but these baptisms are not on there.

Hi Ravelin

Looking at it on first look, it looks like two different Henrys, because the mother's name is different and also the date - 21 December and 31 December.  Mind you mistakes can happen.  I have an incidence where 6 children are baptised to one set of parents in a church and one the father's name is different.

Its a bit difficult with that time period but I would be looking for other records such as marriages and deaths to see if I could find if there was only 1 Henry or two.

Hello Kerry

Thanks for your thoughts on my Henry Howick puzzle.

When i looked at the original Godalming PR i found no other children baptised to a William & Elizabeth Howick. I also checked the burials 1758-1789 and did not find a Henry Howick burial.

My Henry Howick married 1802 St Nicholas, Guildford.  I see there is a gap for marriages for Godalming on the IGI between 1795-1813. I think i need to check if another Henry married in this time span in Godalming.

I checked the Surrey Marriage Index for the marriage of a William Howick but unfortunately could not find it in Surrey.  Undecided

Thanks for doing that William Howick marriage search Kerry. That is very good of you.  Smiley

A shame you were unable to find William on there.

The surname has wrongly been spelt 'Hoick' in some other records.

I had another look at the burials of Godalming. I missed Elizabeth Howick's burial 1st time around.  Roll Eyes

Burial : Godalming :
Elizabeth the wife of William Howick 30th June 1763.

Elizabeth did exist.

Excellent news Ravelin.  At least now even though you have not yet found the marriages you know there were two Henrys.

I wonder if it is worth looking at original PRs for the marriages that might have been missed off the Surrey Marriage Index.

Hello Kerry

I have been looking at the original PR for Godalming.

There does appear to be two or three William Howick/Hoick in the Godalming area for this period.

There is a William Hoick born in Godalming 1739 on the IGI so he is probably the husband of Elizabeth. Also William Howick who is married to Mary and has children baptised 1740's/50's in Godalming. There is a William Howick marriage in neighbouring Compton 1765. He was a bachelor at the time of the marriage.

I found only one William Howick burial in Godalming and that was in 1780. No Henry Howick burials. My Henry died in Guildford in the 1800's.

At least i know that my Henry's father was William. The question is which Henry Howick is my one ?
