Limerick query
« on: Thursday 02 April 09 15:34 UTC (UK) »

Sorry if this is a rather obvious question, but was there a census in Ireland in 1881? If not, when was the nearest ones before and after that year? Cheers!  Smiley

1901 is the oldest surviving complete Irish census. Small fragments and extracts are all the remain for earlier years.

see this link for notes on this and on the census substitutes used : http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,37465.0.html

Thanks for the feedback Shanew. Being new to this I am still finding my way around the board and it can be quite daunting. In a nutshell, how do you rate my chances that I will find a census return for a family who lived in Limerick (North Strand) from about 1878 to 1882? Cheers!

No County Limerick census records survive for 1871 and 1881.

I would recommend posting directly to the Limerick forum (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,68.0.html) with any information you have.

Full Irish Civil records began in 1864 (non-Catholic marriage registration began in 1845) so that is the place to start. The LDS familysearch website has a pilot Irish Civil Index which can be used to find reference details for BMD records.

The Limerick library website has census index details for 1901 and 1911.

The problem is they were in Ireland such a short period. It's already been discussed here and suggestions were given regarding birth certificates.

No I wasn't Limericklad - well done!
I knew he lived in North Strand (but not the street name)and had two sons born in '78 and '80 while living in Limerick. I knew from tracing his movements in Scotland he was an engineer but your info tells me exactly where he worked while in Limerick (I've had to guess all other employers/places of work).
Many thanks for your help!  Smiley

Now to push my luck - are Limerick Distillery and Shannon View Terrace still in existence?

Hi

Margaret was on the ball there!  If you are interested, I'll try to get you a photo of Shannon View Tce when I'm out and about , although it doesn't give a house number in the Trade Directory.

Regards

Tom

Many thanks for taking the time to take the photos, Tom.

If there's ever anything I can photograph or look up for you in central Scotland for you then let me know. If I can help, I will.

No problem, number 4, the double fronted house was a police station, so he would have lived in the one of the other ones.  He would have had a very short walk to the distillery.

The attached would be the view accross the river to King John's castle.  The area is now called Clancy Strand (formerly North Strand
