Looking for Bennett connections in Ledbury
« on: Thursday 02 April 09 23:30 UTC (UK) »

I'm trying to find information on Richard Bennett, spouse is Katherine (Unknown Last Name). They lived in Ledbury, Herefordshire at Wall Hill(s). Richard was born about 1621, Katherine about 1625. I would like to find there birthdates or christening dates, marriage date and Kathrine's last name. Can anyone help?
Thanks!!!

Hullo and welcome to rootschat.  Grin

Have you searched the IGI on familysearch site to see what records are there for Ledbury ?  They have births ans marriages and maybe you could be lucky.

Often pays to have a break then go back and see the lists again with fresh eyes... then one wonders how it could have been missed Roll Eyes

A couple of times I've had that happen.
Good hunting,

Welcome to RootsChat  Smiley

From the BIVRI (British Isles Vital Records Index)

Richardus Bennet baptised 8th August 1619 Much Cowarne, Herefordshire
Father: Georgii Bennet

Richardus Benett baptised 2nd December 1621 Weston under Penyard, Herefordshire
Father: Willielmi Benett

Haven't found a marriage for Richard = Katherine in the BIVRI or the marriage index.

Where did you get their dates of birth from?

Susan, Thanks for the info. I have traced my family back to the Richard and Katherine that I trying to confirm. I have used familysearch.org almost exclusively. I got the approximate birthdates  from there. I have there children's names and confirmation dates and recently found a will for Richard and I think his mother (unconfirmed where she passed the family estate WallHill(s) to Richard. The family lived in Ledbury at Wallhill(s) for a couple of generations until they moved to Hanley Castle. Are you researching this line as well?

Charlotte, I know exactly what you mean. I missed my 7th Great Grandfather because I didn't pay attention to the dates. Then I realized the gap in the dates and checked for the missing family. Fortunitly I was able to find them.
good luck hunting. Lynn Cheesy

Hi Lynn

No I'm not researching Bennetts, had a look at the resources I have to see if I could find a Richard Bennett.

I see that the record you found of Richard c1621 in the IGI (family search) is a submitted one with no sources given.  Expect you are aware to use these submitted records with caution until you can confirm with the original parish records.  The place and date of birth are purely a guess by the submitter, very often based on the place and date of birth of the first child.

Extracted records are more reliable, with my own research I also confirm with the actual parish registers.

Pity the two Richards I found in the BIVRI doesn't give mother's name, would have helped confirm with the will you have.

Hi Susan,
Your response summed up my reason for wanting more information. I actually have two wills. One from Elizabeth Bennett (widowed) passing the family estate to Richard (Son of Richard and Katherine) Elizabeth identifies Richard as her son. This made me start to think that ether Katherine is not the correct name for Richard and Katherine or Katherine and Elizabeth are the same person etc.... I have Richard's (Son of Richard and Katherine) will dividing the estate among his children. The dates and the place Ledbury estate Wallhills all fit. just trying to sort out all the people involved and figure out who everyone is.
I appreciate you looking.
Best of luck on your own research!! Cheesy

Hi Lynn

Don't know if this will help or hinder  Undecided

Found a marriage, out of timescale for your couple,

     Richardus Bennet = Katherine Croone
     9th October 1623
     Yazor, Herefordshire

The key would be to find out the name of Elizabeth Bennett's husband.

Susan,
Thank you so much for your efforts. I'll research this info and see if it fits some way. I agree if I could find Elizabeth's husband that would answer a lot questions. Since the birth dates that I have for Richard and Katherine are guesses it's possible that a generation has been missed.  I've been working on this some today but decided to do some work on my maternal line.
Best of luck to you Grin
