Have I got the right William Wilman?
« on: Friday 03 April 09 18:48 UTC (UK) »

I'm not sure how to do this.

I know Anthony Wellman (christened Willman?) was born in Clewer, Berks, to a William Wilman and Jane. Christened 18/12/1791. In 1819 he married Mary Barkshire 21/10/1819 at St Giles, Reading.

How would I know if the William Wilman christened 12/8/1770 in Giggleswick, Yorkshire, to parents William Wilman and Alice Bell, who married Jane Frankland 2/7/1795 in Giggleswick, Yorkshire is the right William Wilman?

The dates and names fit nicely. But obviously locations do not. I cannot find any other William Wilman/ Willman/ Wellman in the Reading area at that time.

Any ideas please?

regards
Gavin.

Hi Gavin,

I'm not sure whether this is of any help, but nothing lost nothing gained .. ?

The 1841 census claims that a William Wellman, age 74 was living in Berkshire, but the census claims he born in county .. I would imagine you will have seen this though .. ?

His wife was called Jane, is this the one you are referring to ?

Kind regards,

Pels.

Hello Gavin,

I think a few simple sums and a look at the IGI will half answer your question.
Your William Wellman/Wilman and Jane had at least 5 children bapt at Clewer from 1779-1791 (IGI) so they are not the same William Willman and Jane who married in 1795 in Yorkshire and had 12 children from 1795-1818.

Not unless William married 2 Janes half a country apart.

That does not seem likely, particularly as a William age 76 of Bray (b 1743ish) was buried at Clewer 4 June 1819, and a Jane, aged 76, (1742ish) also of Bray, was buried 23 June 1818. (BBI) These dates would put Jane at the very extreme end of her reproductive career in 1791.

In 1851 your Anthony and Mary are still around. A smith and ironmonger in New Windsor, born Clewer; Mary born Reading.

There is a widowed Jane Wellman in 1851 in Berkshire but I don't think this is the right one. Age 84 born Wantage. That puts her b abt 1767 and is probably the one referred to in 1841 by Pels. Her husband, William, was probably the one buried 1843 Wantage age 73.  The IGI has their marriage in Wantage in 1792 and several baptisms for them.

Yours

Hi Pels

No, I hadn't found this reference - though I've searched high and low I somehow missed this one-  many thanks. It places them in Wantage, 50 miles away which is quite a bit but closer than Yorkshire  Grin

Also I note another William Wellman next door - presumably the elder son.

many thanks again

Hi Vinwinann

I've just learned so much - not only about the family line but also how to use IGI properly. I now see how you got the info you found - which will be good for the future. Thanks for what you found - really helpful
