I am searching about Hellen Chester Coombes born in 1869, Stirling; she was the daughter of Robert Chester and Sarah Coombes. Her father belonged to the army of the castle of Stirling. I would appreciate very much any information or pictures about her. Thanks in advance

Hi Rose
Are you sure that Helen was born in Stirling? Can't see that entry on IGI although it may show on Scotlands People.
There is a private tree on Ancestry which has the following children for parents Robert Chester and Sarah Coombes:
Robert William Chester Birth: 1860 - Devonshire
Emma Maria Chester Birth: 1863 - Brighton, Sussex
Alice Chester Birth: 1865 - Ireland
Ellen Chester Birth: 1868 - Aldershot, Hampshire
The different birth locations would fit for an army family. Have you confirmed Helen's birth place from censuses?

This looks like a likely entry for Helen, from www.freebmd.org.uk:
Births 3rd Qrt 1868 CHESTER Ellen - Farnham Vol. 2a Pg. 96
And the family in 1871 in Aldershot, Hampshire:
Robert Chester 45, xxs Sgt Chelsea Pensioner, b. Wimbledon, Surrey Sarah Chester 39, b. Exeter, Devon Robert William Chester 11, b. Exeter, Devon Emma Maria Chester 8, b. Exeter, Devon Alice Chester 6, b. Ireland Ellen Chester 3 , b. Aldershot, Hampshire

Family in Stirling by 1881 - everyone born in England:
Robert Chester 57, army pensioner Sarah Chester 46 Rob Wm Chester 20 Emma Marine Chester 17 Ellen Chester 12
Address: Esplanade, Stirling
And in 1891:
Robert Chester 67, publican Sarah Chester 60 Robt W Chester 30
Address: 45 Main Rd, St Ninians Stirlingshire
The marriage of Patrick Paterson and Helen is showing in Glasgow in 1890, maybe they left for Australia after the marriage and before the 1891 census (I can't see them in Scotland for the 1891 census).

Thank you very much, Monica! You have done a wonderful research, it’s very helpful to me, it is the Hellen Chester I am looking for, I was wrong about the date and place of her birth but all the rest is just right.
You are right, Patrick and Hellen Chester were married in Glasgow in 1891 and they left for Australia where their son Rollo Paterson was born.
Could you tell me some links where I can find more information? I would like to find more dates and if possible some pictures, I am writing the biography of her son Rollo Paterson.
Once more, many thanks, Monica, for your help.

Hi Rose
Not sure where you would find photos of the family except through living descendents, someone may be able to come up with other ideas.
In terms of finding documents:
- www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk is the official pay to view site for birth, marriage and death certificates and census images. You will find the original image of the marriage certificate for Patrick and Helen on there in 1890 (not 1891).
- death certificates for Patrick and Helen should also be available on there, together with their parents I would imagine (assuming Helen's parents remained in Scotland). Scottish certificates are very informative and should help you work back on their families if that is what you are also wanting to do. I think though, from your posts on other forums, that you have already identified and worked back on Patrick and Helen's families.
- the census info I have posted on comes only from a transcript (Ancestry). The original images for the Scottish entries are also available on Scotlands People.
- I could find Rollo on the 1901 census (Reginald Maurice Rollo Paterson) at school in Edinburgh following his return from Australia but struggling to see Patrick and Helen in 1901 on the transcripts.
I have seen the numerous references to Rollo Paterson on line, most of them in Spanish given his time and work there such as http://members.fortunecity.com/fabianvillegas3/arte/datosbio.htm
Regarding Helen being a composer and pianist, not sure where you would find out more about this. It would help to be able to find her and Patrick in 1901 as this would give you more background on the family and also any siblings for Rollo.

Just a thought There is a private member's tree on Ancestry on the line of Robert and Sarah Chester showing their four children. You could try contacting the member direct to see whether any family papers or photgraphs are available.

There is one possible 1901 census entry for Patrick which I will post in case it is relevant:
Patrick Paterson, patient, aged 38. A house painter by trade born in Stirling, Stirlingshire. He shows in 1901 at the Dunoon Convalescent Sea Side Homes, Manse Road Dunoon, Dunoon and Kilmun, Argyll.
And Helen under her maiden name of Chester:
Robert Chester 77, army pensioner Sarah Chester 74 Robert W Chester 40, law clerk Helen C Chester 32 Herbert G C Paterson 7, grandson, b. Stirling
Address: 15 Lower Bridge St, Stirling

Hi, Monica
I take note of all you said and I will try to get the birth, marriage and death certificates from the address you suggest.
I will also visit the page about the references of Rollo Paterson.
Thank you for the information. If you had anything more, please posted, I will be thankful for it.
