I found that Co. Louth was birthplace of Matthews/Wallace ancestors on another family member's family tree. I am trying to prove information. My maiden name was Matthews and many of the same surname in Louth records that I have found are spelled Mathews with one "t". Is this a common change when families emigrated to United States or am I most likely looking at different family groups?

Such variations in spelling weren't uncommon years ago and are nothing to worry about. I've even seem the same name spelt 2 or more different ways in the same document. You might even find Wallace as Wallis, Walls, etc.

My Matthews ancestors in Warwickshire alternated between using one and two ts. There was no pattern even in the 19th century.

You may have noticed that on the 1891 passenger list, 1900 & 1930 censuses, it is Nicholas Mathews, and on the 1910 and 1920 censuses it is Nicholas Matthews. As was mentioned this type of variation is common.
BTW, Nicholas Matthews is my great-grandfather. My grandfather is his son Patrick Joseph.

I would love to compare notes. I lost track of Patrick Joseph after he was about 12 and had no idea what had happened. You can contact me at (*). My great grandfather was Nicholas Joseph, Patrick's younger brother. My deceased father was Nicholas Matthews IV. I am looking to go farther back in the line of Matthews and Wallace lines in Ireland. Pam

Patrick married Mary Crane about 1912. Mary's parents William and Mary Crane were from Ireland but I have less information about them than I have on Patrick's parents. Kathy
